I am thinking about having cupcakes at my wedding instead of a large wedding cake. I have been at weddings where people are more of them because they were easy to access. What advice do you all have about cupcakes? I am having around 300 guests, so how many cupcakes will I need? Any idea of the cost compared to a regular cake?

We are having cupcakes instead of a cake and we have ordered a 6in round cake for us to cut into. We estimated 150 guests w/ a cupcake per guest. Ours will already be packaged individually to go so we want to make sure there is 1 per guest w/ a few left over just in case. We were charged $2/cupcake no matter what type of design, frosting, or cake. Our cake was $15 and then they charge a $30 delivery and set up fee (this includes them packaging them up individually too). All said and done its about $350, probably less.

I am thinking about going with part cupcakes and part cake. With the cupcake stands in the DIY section on here, I was thinking about putting the cupcakes on the lower levels and then leaving a bigger platform and a having two or three small tier cake placed on the top part of the stand. Still get the entire cake cutting experience but gives it a fun atmosphere to it also.

We are also do cupcakes with a 6in round for us to cut into. We are spending almost half of what a big cake would have cost us. Our bakery charges $1/cupcake and then $22 for the round cake. We are estimating 200 people, and I ordered 200 cupcakes (we are also having a candy buffet so they said that not everyone will take a cupcake) however I think I will up the cupcakes if we have more people. Our total cost for the 6in round and 200 cupcakes was $222. They rang it up as retail for me so there was no tax, I love my bakery! Had we gone with a wedding cake and all the serving cakes needed, it would have cost us $450.

We are also having a small cake to cut into and cupcakes. Our catering company said that if we want they will cut up the small cake for our bridal party so we are going to get one big enough for them and then one cupcake for everyone else!

sorry, this has nothing to do with wedding cupcakes… but I’m stuck at work (like always it seems) and my friend made this for her son’s b-day… this isn’t her picture but its the same thing. lol I just love the idea!
maybe if your Fiance is into alligators this could be a “grooms-cupcake”! haha [attachment=751433,96601]

This completely depends on whether or not your guests will be serving themselves or if the cupcakes will be handed out to the tables by a server. If you’re having a buffet I’d say you’d need probably 2 cupcakes per person… especially if you’re having different flavors.
I went to a wedding this weekend & the dessert set-up included weddding cake and some people grabbed more than one piece. I didn’t even get a slice… greedy jerks! haha harsh, I know. It’s just… nothing should ever come between me & dessert.
In my area, cupcakes are about $3 per person where as the lowest cake price I’ve found is $5.50/ serving. It’s definitely a less expensive option than wedding cake, unless it’s buffet style!

My mom and I are making mini cupcakes for my reception. We did a test run last weekend and figured we will only spend about $50 to make 300 mini cupcakes which will be two per guest. It’s a lot of extra work to make them yourself though – I wouldn’t be trying to make them ourselves but our wedding isn’t the same day as the reception so we will have extra time to make them.

My mom and I are also making all of our cupcakes, 1.5 per guest. We’re having approximately 200 people so about 300 cupcakes.
Destination Wedding bride, how are you going about this?

I also recently decided to go with cupcakes after not being able to find regular cake for less than $4/slice. Cupcakes will be about $3 each from one of the best cupcake bakeries in town (has been featured all over the news) but the real difference in price is that we won’t have to pay for the cake cutting/plating fee which is another $2/person. So basically cupcakes will be about half the cost of cake!

I would do 1.5 cupcakes per person… especially if you don’t have a huge cocktail hour or other desserts! Some people will have 2+!

I am having cupcakes and they are definitely cheaper. In DFW, they run about $3/cupcake. I am expecting 180 guests but am only ordering 150 cupcakes. We will also have a grooms cake to feed 120 and my fiance’s grandma is making homemade cheesecakes and buttermilk pies (YUM). We have the country-chic theme going on so I thought it was appropriate to have a bigger variety of desserts as opposed to a lot of one dessert.
