- Wedding: August 2011
So we have an incredibly small wedding budget and my MOH’s parents very graciously offered to purchase our wedding cake as their wedding gift to us. Their cake budget is small though, and the only cake I have been able to find is a square three tier cake from Safeway, which serves 110 people. We are expecting 130-140 guests. So we could do the little extra sheetcake on the side, but I’m kind of toying with the idea of DIY cupcakes for the extra servings.
My idea is to have the tiered cake in the center of the table and two smaller cupcake towers on either side, with approximately 50-60 cupcakes total. This way we could offer a couple extra flavors and some people could have a second serving. Is this a good idea? How would we go about serving? Do you think people would have a preference between cake and a cupcake? I’m afraid some people might be upset about getting served a cupcake instead of a slice of the cake (even though I’d be making the cupcakes myself and they’ll probably taste better than the Safeway cake).
I’m not worried about making them, I could make them a couple weeks ahead of time and freeze them, and my sister/bridesmaids are all pretty good with cake decorating and we’d just decorate the day before the wedding.
What do you think of this idea? Or should we just go with a sheet cake? Also, if we do cupcakes, should we do regular size or minis?
