So, Fiance and I definitely want to do cupcakes with a top tier for our wedding cake. I love how cute and quirky they are! And while they’re all over blogs, I have never been to a wedding with cupcakes before, and neither have any of my friends or family, as far as I can tell. But there are a GAZILLION cake-bakers in Asheville, NC where we are getting married, and since we have total control over vendors at our reception, I’m not really sure where to start and what kind of questions to ask. Help a bee out and tell me what you think!
–How many cake tastings do people typically have if you are choosing your own vendor? I don’t really want to eat my way through the whole city but it’s hard to narrow down without sampling, haha…
–I’m also curious about whether people did mini-cupcakes (I found a few bakers who do this, they are considered 1/2 a serving and cost 1/2 as much, so you order 2 per person) or standard cupcakes.
–Do cupcakes usually have filling like wedding cakes do, or is it just cake flavor + icing?
–How many flavors did you order for cupcakes at the wedding?

You can add flavors to cupcakes, it’s a personal preference. The cupcakery that I’m in love with here does strawberry shortcake cupcakes with strawberry filling that are amazing!! I’ve never been to a mini cupcake wedding, only 1 wedding with regular sized cupcakes…but I thought about the mini ones myself! I’m undecided at the moment, but I’m not having a formal wedding (if that makes a difference). We’re ordering 2 flavors for sentimental reasons, but I suppose you could do even more if you wanted. Ours are vanilla with chocolate frosting (my favorite), and lemon chiffon (FI’s favorite).

Hmm, okay, good to know about the fillings! Our wedding is also not formal. I love how decadent it feels to have a full-size cupcake all to yourself (I love personal pizzas for the same reason, is that weird…?) but the mini ones are adorable and would maybe encourage guests to try multiple flavors…

@merrywidow: p.s. your flavors sound delicious, I think it’s perfect to have a chocolate and a fruit option to please everybody!

We are doing cupcakes! We chose to do regular size cupcakes and mini cupcakes. For our bigger ones we choose 4 more traditional flavors. For the mini cupcakes we chose 8 different flavors. We figured with a lot of flavors people are going to want try more, so it would be better to do some mini. I did find that doing cupcakes over cake is more expensive…

@clairykoo: Oh that’s a great idea, mix and match! That’s surprising about the cost, at least from the websites I looked at it seems like cupcakes are almost half the cost per serving! Did you do a lot of special decorating on your cupcakes? I have seen some amazing and elaborate stuff but I don’t think we’re going to be able to afford it.

@Valdrine: We are going to do three tiers, one big one with the regular size cupcakes, and a mini cupcake tier on either side. It was more expensive because of the amount we ended up ordering…We couldnt choose between the flavors and thought of how much we wanted to eat them that we order enough for everone to have a regular cupcake and two mini. If we had gotten a one flavor cake we probably would have order 1.5 serving per person.

@Valdrine: We tasted at 2 places (Sisters McMullen and Tiffany’s) and went with full size cupcakes . The cupcakes were less expensive than a traditional cake, at least with the decorations and baker we chose (Tiffany’s). You can have fillings in the cupcakes, we did. We had 4 cupcake flavors (chocolate, vanilla, lemon-raspberry and pineapple upside down) and a 6 inch cake for cutting (that was technically a fifth flavor-chocolate-coconut, but the guests weren’t served the cake and we took the leftovers home).

We’re doing regular sized cupcakes 3 flavors red velvet, chocolate, and lemon. My topper cake for cutting will be pinapple (my favorite). My guy doesn’t like fondant he thinks it’s “handled” too much so we went with the cupcakes which turns out to be 2-3 dollars less than per cupcake than per slice of cake.

We are having approximately 200 guests, and will be ordering 175 regular size cupcakes and 50 mini cupcakes. We are picking I think 6 flavors, some with filling, some without. Its all a matter of preference.

We are doing both wedding cake & cupcakes. [each place setting will have a cupcake on a cupcake holder, and there will be more cupcakes at the candy buffet].
We are going to be doing regular chocolate cupcakes for each place setting, and a number of differant ones at the candy buffet. Probably chocolate, vanilla, chocolate fudge, rainbow, red velvet & carrot cake.
