Are you doing this yourself? From what I heard cupcakes can actually be more expensive if you are buying them.

That’s what we are doing.  A small cake for us to cut – then cupcakes for guests.

We are having a DIY kinda wedding with no one to cut and serve a cake.

I’m a traditionalist, so I prefer to have a wedding cake.  As a guest, I’d be happier with a slice of cake because it’s easier to eat (and is generally a larger portion).  You can never have too much cake!!  Plus, I won’t have to worry about getting frosting on my nose.  πŸ˜‰

It depends on how elaborate your single cake would be. If you are getting sugar blossoms and a lot of intricate detail, you definitely will save money by going the cupcake route. However, if you are doing a super simple cake, then I think the cost savings may not be that much, if anything at all.

If both are about the same price, then I prefer a small cake for photo ops and then cupcakes for all. That way, everyone isn’t committed to the same flavor of cake. Plus, guests can help themselves (if you do it dessert buffet style). That can save you cake cutting and plating costs from your caterer.

I think it depends on your style and how you’re looking at getting them done. If you’re having a more laid-back wedding I think they’re super fun and easy to serve. Just note that they may actually be more expensive than a cake, depending on how fancy you want them to be and where you purchase them. If you’re planning a more formal reception, though, I’d say stick to the cake.

Either way, I like the idea of having at least a small cake for the two of you to cut. πŸ™‚

I’m just doing cake, but I think cupcakes and/or cake is fine as well! I like the idea of cake cutting though, so if it would save money (cupcakes can be $$ though) I think you should do one small cake to cut and the rest cupcakes! I’ve seen other threads on the Bee that discuss getting cake or cupcakes at grocery store (Sams Club etc) to save on cost and they work out just fine! Another option is have a small cake to cut with cupcake display, then serve sheet cake to save on cost. I find Whole Foods has reasonable cake as well (32 for 1/2 slab that feeds 40 people).

We are having a small 2 tier cake then a TON of cupcakes! I love how much easier they are to serve and how we could choose many different flavors! Plus I had a lot of fun dressing up our cupcake tower!

We did a cake. I wasn’t able to let go of the idea of a gorgeous, large and flower covered cake. Also, our venue charged a cake cutting fee which still applies to cupcakes (usually the case at most venues) so there wasn’t much savings to be had.

Cupcakes are fun and trendy and definitely more appropriate for some weddings. I have a hard time visualizing cupcakes at black tie/more formal affairs personally but to each their own. In the end really who doesn’t love a yummy cupcake?

I actually prefer eating cupcakes.  I just think they taste better than cake!
