That totally depends.

First of all, does your venue/caterer have a cake cutting fee?  If they do, odds are having cupcakes is probably cheaper.  But if you’re looking to have extravagantly decorated cupcakes they may end up being pricier.

I agree with Navy Wife – it really is going to depend on your location/venue.  Some venues charged a cutting fee if you didn’t use their cake (even if you had cupcakes).  Also, it ended up being more expensive to have a cupcake stand + cupcakes than just a cake surprisingly enough for our wedding.

I would just check with your venue and a few local bakers ๐Ÿ™‚

I never inquired about cupcakes for our wedding but I know that the bakery we’re using charges like $2.00-$3.00 each for theirs. Considering we spent $8.00 per person for our cake, I’d say cupcakes would have definitely been the cheaper alternative but we wouldn’t have been able to achieve the look we were going for if we went that route. I imagine it would have been kind of difficult to cascade leaves on a bunch of cupcakes.

I think a pie table is an excellent idea.

Cupcakes were definitely more economical for us since you’re able to be much more specific about the number of servings you want so there’s less waste. A four tier cake is a four tier cake and even if it’s beautiful and just like your inspiration, chances are it’s not going to feed the exact amount of people you need it to.

Also, with cupcakes it’s easier to have more types. We only did 2 but we could have easily done 5 or 6 flavors if we wanted to.

And you get to do super cute cupcake liners with cupcakes!

As for price, I have a friend who’s a baker so that was her present to us, though I did pay her for materials with a tip.

We did cupcakes because in our area, cake runs $5-$15 a slice; the cupcake guy we went with charged us $2. They were amazing. Other cupcake shops charge a little more but around here at least they tend to be less expensive than cake.

In Boston, I priced cupcakes at $3 each, if that helps. Cake seems to be $4.75 – $9.00 a slice where I looked, so definitely cheaper.
