If I had to decide between the two and just wanted a solitaire, no side stones or anything, I would without a doubt go with an oval. It also faces up a lot larger! Also, wanted to add that cushions are my favorite shape!

Here’s my cushion.  I know nothing about ovals so can’t comment on ovals.  The thing I will say about cushions is each and every cushion is so different.  Unlike other shapes, cushions can be more square, they can be more rounded, they can be more rectangular.  IMO, you will also want to stay away from the “crushed ice” look, b/c that type of cushion will produce a lot less sparkle.

Here’s a picture showing the difference b/t a crushed ice cushion (on the right) and one that will produce better light return (one on the left).  You can see how the one on the left is whiter and brighter than the one on the right, which is poorly cut.

Mine is also not a solitaire, but it is a cushion…with trapezoids on the sides.  I love its uniqueness, and I also think the shape looks the best on my hand.  Here are a few photos from different angles…good luck picking the shape that works best for you!
