I know what you mean. I saw alot of cushion cut rings online and then when I looked at them in person I kept seeing very square looking cushions. I think it really varies from diamond to diamond.

I think the cushion shaped halo helps alot to emphasize the shape of the diamond. My diamond is bezel set with a halo and I think that it makes it look alot less square.

Here’s mine

@fashionbug: Sorry to butt in but I also have a double cushion halo (with a round stone).  Here are some close-up pics, since you’re considering the double!

@fashionbug: No. Don’t have a picture yet. We’re still negotiating. Another thing you might want to consider: when we were looking a jeweler pointed out claw prongs to us. He said they are popular with cushions, especially if you’re wanting to preserve the cushion shape because unlike some prongs they don’t accentuate the corners and make the edges appear softer.

Also, I highly recommend trying on settings. Cushions are NOT a popular stone when it comes to what jewelers keep in stock and there is a chance you won’t be able to see a cushion set in a ring or a setting specially designed to fit a cushion stone. It’s frustrating. But seeing the settings in person can give you an idea of what you really like. I can’t tell you the number of times I had a, “Eh, no thank you,” response to rings I thought I would love. And there were some I was surprised I loved because I didn’t care for their photos online.

You should take a field trip with your guy. ๐Ÿ™‚ It’ll be fun.

@fashionbug: Go into a store and try so methings on.  You can go alone or with a friend and then you can provide accurate info to SO on style and shapes that you like.  Fiance and I went together and both hated rounds on me, we both love the cushion so that’s what he ended up getting for me a few months later!  We just picked up my band over the weekend too!  Here is my set ๐Ÿ™‚
