@NancyCP: Welcome to the boards and congratulations on your engagement!

I have 1.5c cushion cut stone.

My finger size is 4.5, so a little bigger than yours, and the stone looks fairly sizeable on my hand:

I have a size 2.75 finger! For the shank size, I ended up getting the ring sized to a 3 and got sizing beads put in them.

My stone is just over 2 carats. I wouldn’t say it looks overwhelming at all (I have a Ring Bearer stone). But it does look large. Go for it!

If I were you I wouldn’t go any larger than a 1 to 1.25 carat for your size finger if you want it to look believable. I am a size 5 and a 2.2 cushion is PLENTY big on me! Any larger starts to look gaudy and fake.

Mine is on the smaller end from the previous posts, it’s just over 1 ct, and I wear a 4.25.

I think a 1.5 on a size 3 finger would look fabulous!

why don’t you try some on in stores? even if it’s not the right cut — like rounds, you still might get a general idea of how different size stones will look on you.

I have a 2.17 carat RHR which I wear on a size 4 finger. I do think it is too overwhelming though as the basket is fairly sizeable. Mr. Squarepants proposed with a ring that was way too large .. and we had to go get a smaller one more suited for everyday wear.

Keep in mind cushions tend to face up smaller than other cuts of comparable weights. So a 1 ct cushion *MAY* appear to be smaller than a 1ct round. A 1.5 will certainly look large but I think it will still be tasteful.

My ring size is 3.75 and my center stone is .61 ct.

I actually went DOWN in carat of what I thought I wanted. I was 100% sure I wanted a 1 carat diamond, but after trying some on at a few jewelry stores, I switched my search for something between .5-.75 carat.

The best thing to do is to go to jewelry stores and try on some rings of various styles and carat sizes.

Also, there are many types of cushion diamonds. Cushion can describe almost any squarish or rectanglish diamond shape with rounded corners. Here are just 3 examples, all “cushion”:
