My BF is currently having my ring custom designed with a jeweler and he’s been at it for about a month now. He’s been SLIGHTLY frustrated with how long it’s taken in getting it designed.
From what I know, he’s still choosing a stone because the jeweler hasn’t found the type of stone he’s looking for. I know once the stone is chosen, it’s still another 4 – 8 weeks for the ring to be made.
It looks like it’ll be at least another month before the jeweler may find the type of stone that he wants, so we’re looking at 4 – 6 months for a custom designed ring. Is this amount of time normal for a custom ring?

That is how long my ring is taking. My Fiance (proposed sans ring as well) and I will have had three meeting with the jeweler. The first for the “big picture” what do I want talk. The second to narrow the field of stones, metal and overall look/feel. And the third is in a month, where I will be shown several stones fitting my specifications as well as various artist renditions of how a ring would look with the different stones / settings. Then it will be about six weeks until the ring is on my hand – that is the beginning of September at the earliest. Well, in FI’s pocket, he jokes he may wait until I have “forgotten” before proposing again. Fat chance! It has taken more time than buying “off the rack”, but it has been so rewarding for us and we have really formed a great relationship with the jeweler.
Custom made rings take time, but balance that against the fact that your ring will be one of a kind, made specifically for you. It is really touching.
I give myself this talk when I decide I just don’t want to wait and want to run to a “chain” jeweler” and get something right now because my finger feels empty! So, this is all coming from experience!
Best of luck! LB

It took about 2 1/2 months for my ring to be designed/made, but the Fiance already had the stone and knew exactly what I wanted. Most of the 2 months was the actual crafting.
