Congratulations! That’s super exciting.

You need to visit shops and try on different settings IRL. Is there a diamond district in your area? You can make it a fun and romantic outing if your boyfriend goes with you.

Have you considered that you might not need a custom setting? Unless you want really specific design elements that can’t be found in a pre-made ring, you might not want to bother with going the custom route.

Lastly, have a good look online. I spent happy hours looking over jewellery sites for ideas. One of the best sites I found was moissaniteco.com, even if you aren’t interested in moissanite their site is clean, well-organised, and has a terrific selection. Jamesallen.com is also quite good.

Have fun!

Also here’s my customised setting. The band is tapered toward the stone (that was one of the specific design requirements I had) and integrated with the head, which was customised to accommodate my 1.25 ct stone.

that’s so exciting for you! my fiance had mine custom made, and although it was a surprise as to exactly how it turned out, we had talked at length about what i wanted etc. and we went to various jewellery shops to try things on. like the PP says, it is VERY important to try different styles and cuts on in real life! it’s just not the same looking at pictures, and you can’t know what you’ll like on your own hand.

it is a little nerve wracking to trust someone to make it from scratch (i know my fiance was seriously freaked out about it) but as long as you go to a trusted jeweller and are very clear about what you want, i think it is worth every bit of the risk! (and it’s true, you do get MUCH better value for money if you go to the right place). good luck!

oh and to add, after looking at lots of different rings in real life, we could really pick and choose which bits of what styles we liked and then put it all together into a ring perfect for me. that’s the beauty of having it custom made in my opinion!

I agree with PPs, look at a LOT of rings! That’s really the best advice and best thing you can do. Try them on, shop, look online…anywhere you can. I combined probably 3 ring designs for my custom and while there were plenty out there that would have been lovely & I would have been happy with, I think mine is going to be absolutely perfect (it’s almost done so I’m keeping high hopes here lol) Stores do have a lot of markup but remember you are also paying for work when you custom. That being said, I definitely feel like I got more bang for my buck with my custom ring vs a 1 carat ring I found at jared that I was considering for the same price!

@Brickette:  Thank you. I love all of their designs but this one was the one for us :). Dragonflies are special to me.

@Brickette:  “I am probably most worried about letting someone design something from scratch, that is one good thing about buying from a store..”

They show you CAD pictures before the wax is poured. The wax mold is an exact imitation of the finished ring, but of course in wax.

After all the ring shopping you’ll be doing, if you end up finding something you like that a retailer carries, that’s good too and maybe cheaper, :). You don’t necessarily have to go with custom. It’s usually only needed if you like bits and pieces of rings, or if the retailer doesn’t have it in the metal or stone of your preference. Regardless, you’ll have a beautiful ring and the ring of your dreams. Good luck!
