So i’m having a bit of a panic attack about my dress. I’m lucky to have the opportunity to have my dress custom made by a designer as he’s my godmother’s husband. I’ve never been one to like anything off the rack so this seemed like a godsent gift! But i’m terriafied that i don’t like the end result! I trust him and his style but my worrying comes from the fact that I haven’t tried on any dresses to know what certain shapes look good on me. Also I’ll have no clue what my dress looks like until I go back in Oct for 2 weeks where he’ll do the final adjustments and details.
The thing is I live in Trinidad, in the carribbean, and he’s in New York City so any changes to my dress is going to be very hard to achieve given the distance. I was up there about 4 week ago and he did sketches and he made a sample on me, which was 1 layer of fabirc and everything was pinned in to get my shape..so it was VERY hard to visualize how i look in it. and as it was one layer of fabric, no lining i could see every bump or line. I’m usually good with visualizing the end result as i’m a cake artist, but i couldn’t picture it at all! So basically I won’t know what my dress looks like until i go to get it a few months before my wedding.
it’s a very form fitting dress and it’s far from traditional. From our discussions it’s more about the tailoring of it, making sure each seam curves to the curves of my body. I’m 5″5 tall and slim…most would say petite…. hourglass figure… so he assured me any shape would suit my body. The dress is all about the seams, we’re doing raised seams that all curve and flow into another seam or a deatil on the dress, and they are positioned perfectly to elongate cetain parts. i.e make my legs look longer…He’s really good at tricking the eye with fabric to enhance my body. It’s a very low back and it’s suppose to have detail on the back but we didn’t figure that out yet. At one point he mentioned sleeves but i had my heart set on a super low back with very thing straps coming from the front and loopings around my arm, dissappearing under my arm, so it really looks backless. But he told me he’d have to do a “x” strap back to suppose the front but that wasn’t 100% for sure, he said he needed to play around with it. But if he has to do that that changes the style of the dress, and if i had to change the style of the dress i’d go with sleeves (think..what’s her face from that vampire movie, her wedding dress with sleeves minus the lace). But i’m not sure how i’ll look in a dress with sleeves.. and i’m concered about sweating. I don’t sweat much on a regualar basis but it’s a garden wedding and when nerves kick in you never know!
I know i can change things when I go up but when if i need to change the whole dress?! I’d hate to offened him and his work.. and make him rush to make a whole new dress in a week!. Another thing is he’s giving me a VERY good price as it is so i feel like any changes i want to make is more work for him, and it’s more work that he’s not getting paid for. I’m sure he’ll adjust the price to suit any major changes but puts my parents in a akward situation because they have a budget and with the currency exchange being so high we can’t go past what the price of the dress is right now. The currency is TT$1 = US$6.4 …. so US$2,500 is TT$16,000!!!
*sigh* i just need some reassurance. Unfortunatly I can’t post the pictures of me in the sample as he doesn’t want the “process” online. But never the less it looks like nothing anyways. just white fabric with pins.
I did think about going to try on dresses to reassure myself that this is the shape i want. But unfortunatly trinidad lacks Bridal salons. There is a few, but the dresses are awful and cheap looking. The majority of people here fly to the US for their dress.
