My boyfriend of 5 years and I have been looking at engagement rings, we have decided to go custom because I am kind of picky and I havent found a stock ring that I love. I’m looking at princess cut, 3 stone, and I really like the vintage look. I just want to know if some things are worth it. I like the look of diamonds on the prongs in the photo with a solitaire (photo 1). I also like the rest of the head on the one with the peekaboo diamond (photo 2).
I also really like the beading on the second photo and scroll work on the edge as well as how the band is tapered as it goes towards the top by the diamonds in this next photo (photo 3).
What I want to know is how worth it is it to have all the things I said I like in an engagement ring? Do you think it will look too busy with all of that going on? Right now all we have been looking at is engagement rings, I have no idea what I would want as a wedding band that being said is it a waste to get all the tint detailing on the side? Will people see it? I feel like I’m over thinking everything but it’s just such a large purchase I want to make sure everything about it is perfect! Thanks so much for any advice! Pictures welcome if you want to show yours off!

Hi bee. I think going custom would be a good route for you to take. It is for someone that has a clear vision of what they want and you appear to have that. Some of the decisions that you will be making include metal used, width of metal, scroll or beading design, degree of taper of your sidestones, how high the ring will sit off your hand. It is important to work with someon who is experienced with custom work and will communicate with you. Communication is paramount. You don’t want someone else making your decisions then casting the ring before you can respond. If you have not yet, go try on rings at a jewelry store with the elements that you like. They don’t have to be princess, you are just evaluating the settings to see if you like your ideas. Will you notice the diamonds on the prongs in real life, do you like the beading on your hand or would you like pave.
I went custom and commited just about every mistake that I have warned you about. I still have a lovely ring. If you opt for platinum it will show a seam when resized. I ordered my ring a half size too big and have not resized it for that reason. Maybe I will try sizing beads. I still have a lovely ring. Here is my 1.36 ct antique cut pear set in a platinum halo with F VS2 diamonds.

I think it’s really beautiful and I love rings that have that much attention to detail. It’s my understanding that these things can be pretty expensive though, so I would try to ask about what the added cost is and decide if that’s worth it to you. Maybe just pick one of the elements. No, I don’t think anyone else will really notice it- but you will and that’s the most important thing! My ring has a little side detail and it’s probably my favorite part, no one else notices I’m sure but I look at it a lot! If I decide to wear a wedding band on the inside it’ll hide that though and that makes me sad… I might wear the band on the other side just cause of that

delphinia : I love antique pears, your ring is beautiful! The main stone is also F? I’m trying to figure out what color to go with for my antique pear moissanite in RG setting.
Nursejenna: Go with whatever elements you want to include, since it’s your ring! Intricate details are great if you want it to look vintage. I personally like that you two are going with something you got to think about… It makes it nice and personal. I love the scrolls, by the way.
