I posted a want ad for a dress and I’ve received several replies from people who say they can custom make dresses as well as replicate the ones found in bridal stores, and for a fraction of the cost. Has anyone ever done this? If so, was the dress an exact replication or were there changes you weren’t expecting? Some of these messages are indicating prices as low as $250, but i’m afraid that i’ll get a dress that is worth $250 quality wise…if you know what I mean.
Any feedback is appreciated!!! Thanks.

I know my mother is getting her dress custom made from a woman who also makes bridal gowns. While her dresses seem to be less expensive than in the store they are not that low. I would try looking for a reputable seamstress in your area that makes gowns.

I would be very careful about where the dresses are coming from. I’ve read a lot of posts about the Chinese dressmakers who tell you they can make a replica and then what you get isn’t even close. It’s almost impossible to get a refund! And even then, you probably won’t get the shipping back…
I would just watch out for anyone with poor English, as they are probably just a rep from one of the Chinese dress factories. Their customer service is non-existent and if you don’t like your dress there’s pretty much nothing you can do about it!

I received an email from someone in Canada as well about making a replica that would look identical to the real dress. She said her seamstress would have to change the lace a bit but that the dress would look exactly as it does in the david’s bridal stock photo that I sent. For some reason I am still hesitant. I inquired about a return policy and am waiting on a reply about that. I can’t afford to spend $500 (tax and shipping included in that) and then get a dress that isn’t what I want and not be able to do anything with it. I would rather spend the extra money and get the real thing, and not put myself through anymore stress than I need. Thanks ladies for your feedback!

I looked into getting a custom dress but nixed the idea when the seamstress wouldn’t send me any fabric samples. What kind of reputable place wouldn’t send a swatch? Then she said she couldn’t get what I was asking for (you’d think a lady who makes dresses for a living could get ivory silk).
When I told her I didn’t want to order without samples she said she was working on a dress made of the material that I was inquiring about and then said that she wouldn’t have pics till the following week and that if I wanted to get mine in time I’d have to order that week.
It was very fishy that she was trying to force me into ordering without having seen fabric or samples so I ended up buying a dress elsewhere.

ordered a custom dress from thecustomdresses.com — it just got delivered and is sitting on my front porch right now.
I cannot wait to get home so I can see; I’ll provide details as soon as I get to try it on! :]

I tried to go this route, but it went really really awful. It’s a long story but my advice is just to find a dress within your budget, it’s not really worth it. So many girls offered me the same advice but I just blew them off, and then it came back to bite me. Whatever you decide to do, dolots and lots of research on the company you go with. 🙂
