I’m considering having my dress custom made through Etsy. I created an alchemy request and already got a ton of responses. Most weren’t great but some could work.
Has anyone had their gown custom made through etsy? I’m a little skeptical.

not a gown but i’ve had jewelery made for me from a vendor on there….. i think it depends on the person and how many they’ve made etc. what their “feedback” is like (whatever it’s called on etsy)….. like i wouldn’t have a gown make from someone who is overseas or someone who had a zero response, you know?
i love etsy……. there are tons of people on there who i think could make a beautiful gown…… did you look to find someone who makes something that is your style first and contact them? or just put out the alchemy call? maybe try the first thing – then you have more control?

I put an alchemy out on Etsy a couple of weeks ago for a custom made wedding dress put I’m still too skeptical to actually go through with it too. I would too love to know who has done this and who did they use.

I used Alchemy for a dress for my City Hall wedding and it was a nightmare. I found a local seller with great ratings. I did a few fittings with her, and thought she seemed pretty competent but I had only seen the dress partially in muslin form in the weeks preceeding the wedding. She didn’t have the final dress sewn until 5:00 pm the day before the wedding and it fit terribly, didn’t look much like the sketch she sent me at all. It was totally unwearable. She did refund my money but it was a HUGE waste of time and big cause of stress. I highly advise against it or to buy a back-up dress in case Etsy doesn’t work out. Etsy is great for jewelry, household decor, etc but I will never never again consider custom clothing.

The basic gist of my “dream dress” is a plain satin ivory a-line gown with a sweetheart neckline and a lace jacket type of thing with 3/4 sleeves and a colored sash. I cant seem to find the dress anywhere but what I am now considering doing is buying the gown from a local boutique and having the jacket made. If something goes wrong with that, I could easily buy something to replace it.

I put up an alchemy and am having my dream dress made for a fraction of the cost. Just be sure to look at ratings and ask for a full portfolio before you commit to anything.

@CaitMarae- having a bolero jacket made seems a lot less risky than the dress. I don’t think that you can tell everything from a seller’s rating. For example, the Etsy seller I worked with cancelled our transaction so I have no opportunity to leave feedback. If you look at her profile, it reads that she has a 100% rating.

if it’s a pretty standard dress (which it sounds like it might be) maybe you can have a local seamstress make it for you? i did that with my first wedding dress. i bought the pattern and the fabric and took it to a local tailor (they make suits so they are really good at bespoke) and asked if they could make the dress. it was VERY reasonable (it was a while ago but it believe the total cost for everything was under $300. i had four fittings. it fit like a glove……)
think about it – if they can alter a man’s suit (which is pretty complicated), they can make a straight forward wedding dress, right? sewing is sewing for the most part. doesn’t hurt to ask anyways……
