On Monday, my dad went in to have his pacemaker battery replaced…while they were trying to sedate him, he stopped breathing…when they tubed him to give him some oxygen, his heart stopped. They had to manually do compressions for a while to get things started again. They were able to eventually proceed with the surgery, but he never fully woke up afterwards. Later that afternoon, doctors decided to induce hypothermia to reduce any damage that occurred when he was without oxygen, and to give his body a chance to rest. He is now warmed back up, and off sedatives…just waiting to see when he will wake up…hopefully within the next 72 hours.
Please keep my family in your thoughts and prayers…I feel so trapped, not being able to help my mother much from 16 hours away. My little brother (8 years old) is taking it pretty hard, too.

Thank you, ladies. This is so hard to deal with, 58 days out. My mother and I had actually discussed my dad’s health prior to the surgery, and I knew that he might not be able to travel for the wedding, but this is an unexpected kick in the pants. We had been toying with the idea of a vow renewal/extra church blessing a few months after the wedding when we go to visit my family, so that my dad could be there for that…so, now, who knows what will happen. Trying not to think about it too much until he wakes up and we assess the situation.

Praying for you! It sounds like the doctors are doing a good job though, so let that be a little bit of comfort.

Thank you, ladies. Not really any update…a student’s mother offered me a “buddy pass” to fly home if I choose, and my school will give me all the time off I need, which we will decide after my mother meets with the doctors tomorrow. If nothing else, I can help my mother with household stuff, get some freezer meals made, etc.
