Hi Laura,

I found that the total cost really depends on the venue rental fee as well as what you’re looking for as far as catering. It’s hard to compare apples to apples, but we do feel that we are getting more for our money by bringing in an outside caterer and buying all of our beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). It seemed like most venues in DC started closer to 7k to 10k just to reserve which could make a huge difference. We’re getting married in Old Town Alexandria and our fee was 4k and included tables and chairs. Catering estimates varied anywhere from 8500 to 17000. I sort of figured if we’d gone with a hotel it would’ve ended up being at least 16k for venue and catering regardless of what we did, but by doing it all separate we have total freedom to bring in who we want and how we want to spend that 16k versus it automatically going jsut to the venue and food if that makes sense. It was a lot more legwork though, so the convenience of using a hotel of somewhere all inclusive is something to consider. Our catering right now is 9300 for a buffet for 120 people and we are expecting to spend around 1500 to stock our bar (full bar). If we had gone with a full seated dinner with servers that would’ve added anywhere from 1k-3k to our total. I hope this helps!

It really depends on what you’re looking at serving, the type of meal (buffet or plated), how many appetizers/ hors douevres your serving, what rental items you need, the alcohol you’re looking at.

My wedding is in DC proper, and I did a lot of research into both venues and caterers.  If you have specific budget questions, feel free to PM me (I try not to do the $ talks on the forums!).
