I think it depends.  Are you planning on getting married in DC?  Or in VA or MD?  I think regardless, if you really want to get married in DC in April, go for it!  You just may need to book things really early.  Good luck!

A good friend of mine got married on Cherry Blossom weekend. It ended up being fine, and some of the guests enjoyed going down to see the blossoms before the wedding! The only problem they had was that they had to end their hotel blocks early–one hotel’s block closed 2 months before the wedding.

I don’t think the other weeks of April are as busy with cherry blossomers, especially at the end of the month. There are always a lot of things going on in DC in April because the weather is nice–but the weather is exactly why an April wedding is a good idea!

I agree–once the peak weeks are done and the festival is over, it definitely dies down in the city.  April would be very beautiful in DC!  In fact, last year during the peak weekend, I saw two seperate brides taking pictures–and they had fairly large wedding parties, so I would assume (maybe incorrectly) that the wedding was a decent sized one!

Yeah you would be fine having it the week after the festival – all would have died down and the Cherry Blossoms would probably still be in good viewing!

hey there.  I am having my wedding this year on april 9th (the day of the parade) during cherry blossom festival AT the jefferson memorial.  I anticipate that it will be absolutely CRAZY!  But we just decided to embrace the crowds in hopes that the trees will be beautiful.  Historically, people will flock during the blossoms, but the festival also draws people, so if they coincide, there will be more then 1 million extra people in the city.  If they don’t then some will come for the blooms and others will come for the festival and it will only be a bit more crowded then normal.  The biggest issue for us was PARKING.  it is already difficult to find parking, so look for a venue that comes with it!

Just did a quick search, and it looks like the Cherry Blossom Festival will be will be March 31 – April 15; with the Parade on Saturday, April 14.  So maybe if you waited until the third weekend you would be fine?

@efitzger: Every year I see brides taking pictures at the Cherry Blossoms, so it has definitely been doable for others! Best of luck!

I would give your Out of Town guests of an idea of just how crazy it can get, though, so that they plan enough time to get there. E.g., if they take the metro they will be squished in their wedding clothes (which could be fun!), and it will take them much longer to get there than it would on a different weekend. As long as they know, though, it should be fine.

@efitzger: So jealous! Did you need to get a permit? I know if you want to do a photo shoot you need a permit, but don’t know about just having a ceremony.

yes got the permit.  I would say definately don’t risk it without one because I have heard stories of people being stopped or asked to leave by park police without one.

@efitzger: Congratulations on your wedding this weekend! I’m sure it’s going to be lovely. My fiance and I passed by the Jefferson Memorial this past Saturday on our weekly trek through the city. There was another wedding being held at the Memorial, and it was just gorgeous among all the cherry blossoms and scenery. I’m sure your wedding will be beautiful.
