Expenses for this next year….
- wedding… check
- selling old/purchasing a new house…. check
- furnishing said house (because we were broken into and robbed twice in the past 6 months)… check
all seemed good and well, finances were thin but in place and then on Thursday….
We were hit (not our fault) and my poor car is smashed!! Luckily no major injuries, I had to go get checked out because I had 16 seperate corneal abrasions and blurry vision for 2 days.
- So now add a new/used car onto that list…. grrrrrrr

Insurance wont cover the cost?

Cars are never worth to insurance companies what they are to you. It was an older car (97 Cavalier) but ran great and we just put new tires and brakes on it (close to $1000). We will be lucky if they give us $500 for it. $500 wont buy much these days. Plus since it is our only vehicle we need a rental car for the week to get to work while we are car searching. And they wont give us the insurance company approved rate until the claim is settled. So it costs close to $50/day for a car but we only get $25/day covered, and since the claim is not further along they wont give us their negotiated rate….. ARRRRRRG!!!
I hate hate hate insurance companies.

@Renee: Ouch! Wishing you a speedy recovery!
@Lefeymw: If the car is totalled, insurance will only give the Kelly Blue Book price for the car. In my experience, that amount of money generally will only cover the cost of a down payment or buying a used car.

I hope everything works out for you. We encountered a similar issue while buying a house and planning a wedding. Everything was all lined up- and then Fiance car suddenly needed about 1,500-2,000 worth of work. Ouch.
At least neither of you were seriously injured!

And a little extra kick….
My fiance went to get some items out of the car that were left in there in the chaos of the reck, the cops, me getting to the hospital, etc.
And NO GPS, the coins were mostly taken, and the interior of the car was trashed. In the big picture not a big deal but seriously someone stole our GPS too…. Grrr!

If you end up with a new car, look into gap insurance. It’ll give you full reimbursement on your car’s original value. Very helpful while you’re still upside down on your loan vs the blue book value of your car. Obviously wouldn’t have helped you in this case, but always good to know the options out there…
