Let me introduce my self real quick because I’m new to WeddingBee! I am from Pittsburgh, PA and in my senior year of college. I got engaged in September, but I feel very behind in my planning (especially reading what most of you have done)! I stalled in the planning because it took forever to figure out a date that worked. But we finally at least have a place and a date : )
I am just now starting my Christmas break. With almost 4 weeks off, I know I need to get a TON of wedding planning done while I don’t have any school work. My question for you all is; did you buy a wedding planning guide/binder/notebook thing? Because I still haven’t but kind of want to. Yet I don’t want it to be a waste if I’m not actually gonna use it. And with all the checklists online, do I need to buy one too? Any suggestions/opinions?
Thanks and I look forward to sharing ideas!

I’m a fellow burgher too! Congrats on your engagement. In my post-engagement excitement I did buy a wedding planner, it’s a huge purple binder that is really cumbersome to carry around and I haven’t used it much since. I would suggest getting a 3 ring binder to hold copies of all your contracts and do the rest electronically. With excel and a few great checklists you can get online you should be set.
Also, I’ve done a ton of research on vendors in the area, let me know if you need any help or suggestions!

welcome to weddingbee! I don’t think it makes sense to buy a wedding planning book/binder. I use folders (1 for flowers, 1 for hair inspiration, 1 for tux styles I like) and they work out well for me. You just need to find a system of organization that works for you. For a few months I just dumped all my pamphlets and inspiration into a big bag–that was a mistake! I couldn’t find anything. Since I started my organization based on folders, I have had easier times finding certain items.

Sweet! I may be looking to you with more questions about vendors in the near future : ) thanks for the offer! I am taking you advice and just using a 3 ring binder. I really like the checklist on Weddingwire.com so I think I’m gonna mostly use that. Thank you for the suggestions! How are your plans coming along?

Thanks for the advice, I think I am gonna surpass the wedding planner! The folders are a good idea. I am not the best at being organized so I’m gonna try! lol

Woohoo! 1 out of 4 things done 🙂

The weddingwire checklist and budget tool are both easy to use and customizable. Wedding plans are coming along pretty nicely. I live in DC but we’ll be back in Pittsburgh for a week between Christmas and New Year’s for a lot of eating, sleeping and wedding stuff. Can’t wait 🙂 Definitely let me know if you have questions!

@ BlueChampagne- what did you get accomplished?? I have ZERO done for the month! I’m gonna try and squeeze in our shuttle booking and cake tasting next week just to stay on track!

I sent out my Save-The-Date Cards. That was the only thing that I felt really NEEDED to be done. The rest I just wanted to do. Next month I will NEED to put down a deposit for flowers or she will not hold my date…
I found that shuttle booking was easy and quick, so hopefully it will be for you also 🙂

I’m definitely failing on my winter break to-do list! So far I’ve done absolutely nothing I said I was going to do while on winter break. I have two weeks left before spring semester starts so I’ve got to get moving on everything!! How are everyone else’s December to-do lists coming along? Not too much time left this month. =)

Here’s my list for end of December- Mid January
1) Send out STD’s (which was supposed to happen today, but due to a Blizzard here in NYC I couldn’t make it to the post office!)
2) Order the invites! Magnetstreet.com has an awesome deal until 1/04/11 so I have to get on it.
3) Look at/try on my dress! It is supposed to be in some time this week, even though I’m not going to do any fittings until April/May, I’m still really excited to look at it, touch it and try it on =) lol
4) Start shopping for the guy’s tuxs and/or suits..still undecided on which they will wear!
5) Set up my hair & make up trial!
6) Go visit a florist—I know I’m probably REALLY late on this one.
