Hi all. Firstly, I haven’t posted that much so I apologize if this is in the wrong place or looks completely jacked up. My Fiance and I decided to start looking for our first dog. He has been around dogs his whole life, I haven’t. This will be my very first (at 25!). Today we fell in love with a one year old boy named Max. He is an American Bull Dog and Dalmation mix. He was so sweet and gentle, didn’t bark at all. At one point we were all sitting on the couch in the meet and greet room. Max leaned over and just rested his head on my FI’s shoulder and let out this little sigh. We were sold then and there!
The only issue we forsee us having is from out apartment complex. We are living here until May when our lease is up. We are then going to buy/rent a house. Our application is already approved, thankfully. We are just worried that the people in the office will deny him because to the uneducated eye, he could look like a pit bull. As many of you know pit bulls are considered a bully breed and not allowed in many apartment buildings (which is a whole other story I could go on and on about). The shelter staff suggested we take a bunch of pics of Max to show them and allow them to make a decision that way.
I’m just a big bundle of nerves. Its hard to explain but I know we have a connection to this dog. We loved him instantly and he seemed to claim us as his people. After we took pictures and put him back in his kennel I promised that we would return for him. He watched us leave. I’m heartbroken because I wonder if he thinks we are going to abandon him like his previous family. I couldn’t help but to sob in the parking lot.
This is a picture of Max. What do you think? Any suggestions as to how I can convince them that he is a permissable breed?
Thanks for reading. I know this was long. I just needed to vent and perhaps connect with someone who has gone through the same thing. The earliest I canknow anything is Monday.
Pics are huge. Sorry I clearly have no idea what I’m doing!

OMG, he’s so beautiful! I do hope you get to keep him. After we adopted our rescue Pom, we found out dogs weren’t allowed (we just assumed, since we already had cats). We ended up moving because of it. Please keep us updated!!

@FutureMrsGriffith: I know that some places don’t like for you to have pit bulls since most people seem to think they are all horrible dogs just waiting for the prime time to rip out your throat (eyeroll- Sorry, I get heated about this because I now have two pit mixes and I love them dearly) but sometimes they treat American Bulldogs a bit different. I second what the shelter said, take pictures of him and show them to the people you’re renting from. I wouldn’t just flat out ask them if bulldogs are ok, but even mentioning the breed to some people would be an automatic no.
When I first got my dog, I expected that I would run into trouble from my landlord (I was renting an apartment at the time) because my boy was a pit mix, but everything was fine. I was just told that he needed to be on a leash (which was the rule for all dogs at the complex) and I had to sign a paper saying that I would take care of the dog, keep him quiet and that I’d had to pay for any damages.
Good luck! I hope everything works well for you! He’s such a handsome boy.

Ahhh he’s too cute! I’m so glad you get to adopt him! 🙂 We’ve got a pit mix and she’s the sweetest thing on earth – they are so full of love, you can’t even imagine! The bully breeds get such a bad rap, but as long as you train and socialize them, they can be the most amazing pets.

A safe bet is to say…”he’s not a pit mix…he’s a boxer mix.”
Boxers have similar heads 😉
But if he’s listed as a pit mix at the shelter/rescue, then that won’t work.

@FutureMrsGriffith: Yay – congrats! Fi and I put an application in for an adopted dog this weekend tooo 🙂
I don’t think he looks like a pit bull, and would be willing to fight the apartment complex on that. You’re right, people are just uneducated. In another post, a bee said there is a test you can buy (on Amazon I think she said) that tells you what breeds are mixed into your dog, that might be worth a shot if your apartment complex starts pitching a fit. Otherwise your vet could write you a letter.

Congrats!! He’s sooo cute!
And I would have totally melted if he’d laid his head on me and signed like he did y’all. I mean – that’s complete comfort and contentment for him!

I signed all of the paperwork today and everything. We’re just waiting on our furnace to get replaced before we pick him up. Its best that we don’t introduce him to a house with a bunch of strange dudes running around. If the furnace is done by tomorrow night we will pick him up then.
I’m hoping we can work around my schedule. I’m working later than I normally do the next few days so maybe I can get someone to cover part of my shift. So tomorrow night, wednesday morning at the latest! We are so excited and relieved that everything worked out. While I was there filling out paper work three people inquired about him. I was quick to pipe up and say, “hey, thats my dog!”
I took him some treats and walked him around the play yard. He needs some training on the leash, but knows how to sit. He is too sweet and I have yet to hear him bark at anything. He seems super interested in cats, though. Hopefully introductions to my pet rats go okay.
Anyways heres a pic to hold you over 🙂
