Hi! First post here. I am getting married in 12 months and I cannot decide between the two reception places arm looked at.
The first is an old former train station. Over as hundred years old. Lots of windows, a small outdoor space with patio furniture. Has charming details like an old wooden phone booth, ticket countLisbon old telephone switchboard, etc. It matches my vision perfectly and provides just the right historic small-town Midwestern feel I want. CONS: it will be very cramped, it’s in a semi-shady part of town, so we might need to get security for the cars, the kitchen is tiny and has only one small oven, we’d have to do all the set up ourselves, hire a caterer (whose food looks delicious!), we’d have to do all the prep, clean-up, and take-down outselves or hire someone to do it and once we factor in all the extra costs it might cost more than the other venue.
The second option is a golf club. They’ll do all the cooking, all the set up, all the take down. They have linens and dishes and everything else. It’s pretty much all-inclusive and will probably cost less in the long run. And it has plenty of space. CON: it’s a golf club. It has no character.
I know I should go with the golf club, especially since I am a long-distance bride planning from halfway across the country, but I just can’t seem to let the train station go. Thoughts?

From what I have observed, weddings are never easy no matter what vendors promise, lol. So if your budget allows, go with your heart, the train station!

@MagNCheese: maybe there’s another place you haven’t considered yet? If you want you can PM (private message) me, and I’ll try some searches for you. Just include your basic area or count, budget range, etc

Do you have pictures of this train station? That sounds amazing! I would rather that vs a golf club and that’s coming from someone who is having a regular ol’ reception at a hall.

You might want to look into what a DOC would cost you, and what the caterer and staff are willing to do as far as setup goes before trashing your dream venue. Just a thought! Also, talk to the venue, see what others have done!

I had the same dilemma! One venue I loved for it’s character but needed a lot of outside decorating, food, alcohol, linens, etc. brought in. The second one was pretty but everything was taken care of in house. I opted for the second, for the obvious reason I didn’t want any stress or have to do much myself. I am still happy with my decision and don’t think about the other ever. I made my decision based on reasoning and finances, not emotional. But I’m not saying that’s right. This is your wedding, your dream. Chose whichever one makes you happy and you have that feeling that this is your venue.

Thank you bees! Your perspective really helped. I think I’ll probably end up going with the golf club. I really love the train station, but the bottom line for me is that I think it will be too cramped. Nobody will enjoy themselves or the charming atmosphere if they can’t move. @GeorgiaBride so glad to know that it worked out for you! That’s really good to know.
P.S. sorry for the typos. I posted from my phone and it has the weirdest autocorrect.
