@Winter11: Are your cabinets all the way to the ceiling?  Or are you looking for something to put on top of your cabinets?

I don’t have pictures, but my mom has really nice decor above her kitchen cabinets. She put some rope lights up there, but you can’t see them — you can just see the light that they create. She also put various mismatched clear glass vases and scuptures up there. The light hits them and creates shadows on the ceiling and it’s really pretty and understated! The clear Christmas lights and clear glass vases go with any color decor, as well.

I don’t know how much space you have above your cabinets, but my parents have decorated theirs with vintage glass seltzer bottles (like in Rick’s kitchen on Castle, if you watch that).  I love the way they look!

We have glass bottles and pitchers with greenery in the on top of our cabinets. My parents had tall skinny bottles with colored water in them, they looked really nice! The nice thing about sealed bottles or containers is they don’t get as dusty as having greenery or something just out on top.

I have a couple fake plants (not too many or it’s just cheesy) and a statue of a chef with his belly sticking out and a wooden letter sign that says cafe. Even just having a few things up there makes it look nicer. Oh and I found a wooden sign that I hung on the wall above the cabinets. I’d look at Ross and places like that for knick knacks, vases and fake greenery that’s matches your aestetic. You can find some great little decor items there for cheap

im putting my mom’s antique cake display that doubles as a punch bowl on top of ours, we are using it at our wedding so itll have twice as much sentimental meaning to us.

I think choosing a “theme” makes it easier than just going with a bunch of random stuff. A friend of mine chose “Americana” and has stuff she feels would have been used in a 40’s war-era kitchen, like wooden flags and an old iron bike (small, of course). Personally I would avoid greenery, because it would be hard to dust up there and it could get a bit greasy. Do you get any catalogues delivered? You can look at a few of their setups for ideas. Pottery Barn seems to go nautical lately, with ropes and sailboats and shells and stuff. Or you could try something seasonal and do large vases filled with faux citris? If “above the cabinets decorating” doesn’t net you much, try looking up tablescapes and then adapt for a larger scale

We have a couple bottles of wine and quite a few boxes of Keurig coffee.  And a roll of parchment paper.  Kitchen is small, we need that space.  🙂
