A lot of high schools in my area rent out places like that for prom – they’ve used the Please Touch Museum and the Franklin Institute recently.  Have you tried the Adventure Aquarium in Camden?

@Lady_B:  Ah yes, well that makes sense 🙂  There are tons of other lovely venues in the area, but they mostly cater to weddings, so they probably wouldn’t fit your description of “off the beaten path”.  Hope you find exactly what you’re looking for!

Does your price include tax and tip?  Remember, most places add 27% in NJ (7% sales tax and 20% gratuity).  That’ll jack up your bill real quick.

I will say the Camden Aquarium is beautiful for events. The thing is, their package is pretty bare bones and starts at I think $140 plus t&t, so you’re looking at like $170 a head there (although I never tried to negotiate with them… Might be possible).

All those venues are going to be pricey.  That’s just how unconventional reception sites roll in this area.  My friends got married at the Constitution Center, and it was GORGEOUS, but I have no idea on the prices.

Not exactly off the beaten path, but there are a lot of area golf clubs that are really beautiful, and most of them have VERY reasonable pricing offerings at varying price points.  Also check into Aloft Hotel in Mt. Laurel- it’s a little pricier from what I remember, but it is a beautiful space.

@Lady_B:  Thats funny- we ARE getting married at the Please touch museum and our runner up was franklin institute- So price wise they were about equal in the end- sneaking in around 150-160 pp, but thats everything included-tax etc.  Curtis center by cescaphe is amazing– but still right around that price. Tendenza/vie are a tad cheaper.  The horticultural center is a different idea and could work for april.  Museum of archeology gets a decent amount of attn, the kimmel center now has an awesome rooftop garden thing i saw. … Yes- i researched venues forever- let me know if you need more help!

@Lady_B:  First of all, I hate to break bad news, but the Franklin Institute has a 5 year waiting list for weddings.  I know, I think it sucks too.

Second, I’ve been to a wedding at the Delaware Museum of Natural History and it was really lovely.

@skr5186:  My SIL.  She contacted them for her October ’11 wedding, and was told that Saturdays in popular months book 5 years in advance.  It might be less now, since they only have 1 choice of caterer and its very steep.

We’re going very off the beaten path 🙂

Appel Farm Arts & Music Center in Elmer, NJ (appelfarm.org)

But it’s a very DIY venue — as in hire your own everything.  (They do have tables and chairs)

Take a look at the Aldie Mansion in Doylestown.  (Its in Bucks county PA).  I’m getting married there soon!  It’s a very unique space (still affordable), and they have weddings down to an art form.    Heres a link with some photos http://partyspace.com/provider/detail/765 They also do an open house every Tuesday evening, no appointment necessary: very convenient.  Good luck!

@FutureMrsStrong:  Both good suggestions, the latter is pretty if random families aren’t taking a day trip!
