Wait!  Why deal with the DMV twice? I get the eager, sentimental side, but it just seems like a lot of extra work and expense to me…especially since it’s only two weeks.

nah – i’d wait to change it.

heck, i waited 10 months to change mine! course no one knows we’re married…and no one knows i’ve changed my name yet either… :p

and i also don’t know about oklahoma or florida – but here in indiana i had to wait a few weeks for the gvt to send my new license as they all go through homeland security now and the MAIL you the new DL.

I had the same problem.  What I did was get my name changed with the SSA and then waited on my license until we moved.  After I got my license, I was able to change all our financial accounts (except the stupid mortgage! oh well!).

You can still use your new last name on unofficial stuff for the fun and do the legal business later.

go ahead and change it through the social security office before hand. Do you have an address in Florida already that the new card can be sent to? Then change it on your license and such when you get to Florida.

i haven’t changed it on credit cards or my mortgage yet – waiting to do that while i’m at work and again no one at work knows i’m even married yet! :p

@soonerpsych: I was not told that at all.  Most places it doesn’t matter if the license is changed a bit later than the social security office.  I just went to the new DMV with my new SS card and marriage license and old license and told them I changed my name and they were completely fine with it!  I would contact the state where you are moving to make sure that this would be okay.

I’d wait. It’s what I’ve done, which is why I’m here 5 months after my wedding and only *just* starting to change my name on official documents. Similar reasons as you, to do with drivers licenses (long story). I changed it at work pretty quickly and have started to get used to it, but I think it will help when all my cards and mail etc are in the new name and I’m using my new signature (is it sad that’s the bit I’m looking forward to most?).
