Does anyone know if there is anything out there that can help me start to get ideas of what I want rather than again going to the Diamond District in NYC to get harassed? I want to play around online but not on the typical Blue Nile or Debeers websites because I want something a bit more custom versus what they offer.
What did all you ladies do when you knew that you wanted something different but didn’t quite know what it was or how to explain it to your now husbands/fiances?

This is what I did – I don’t know if its an option, but if it is, I would recommend it. First I looked online like crazy. At jewelers web sites, designers, on here, on ringenvy…pretty much anywhere I could find pictures of engagement rings. And I saved the links to everything I liked.
Then I went in the stores to try stuff on, knowing a little about what I liked and more about what I didn’t want (no three-stone, no halo, thinner band, diamonds on the band, etc..). We went to a few different jewelers, I tried on lots of different rings and then we picked the jeweler we liked the most to have the ring custom made. At that point I showed him all the different ideas I liked and we tried to figure out how to incorporate them together into a ring that will be uniquely mine.
Point of the story – I designed my own ring with my boyfriend input. He was fine with this (even happy about it) because it means I get the ring I want on my finger forever and he doesn’t have to guess what that ring is. Now, we are not traditional and therefore this was an easy and obvious choice for us. If you or your boyfriend are more traditional and he wants to pick out the ring then I would simply suggest keeping a file of styles you like and give it to him along with notes of what you like (or dislike) about each one.

Green Lake Jewelers will let you put a bunch of their example rings in a folder and write notes and a designer will get back to you with custom drawings.
