I felt I had to get this off my chest because I’m so upset… I went a for a preview with Design Visage for hair and makeup six months before my wedding. Lauren who did my hair and makeup was really nice, and I filled out a form on that day with my wedding info. STUPID of me for not reading it thoroughly, but apparantly that was a contract that I’m bound into and only had 3 DAYS to cancel. I used a different vendor for my engagement photos last month and decided to go with them instead, and gave a cancellation to Design Visage with 2.5 months to go. Their website and my inital form stated my deposit of $150 would hold an artist for my wedding date and is non-refundable. How would you interpret this? I took it to mean the deposit holds the date and if I cancel, I lose the $150 deposit. WRONG. They’re holding me liable for the entire charge of $400, even though I have no intention of using them. The owner claims she explained this to me on the phone, but I’m not a liar and this never happened. At the time I intended to go with them and told this to her on the phone, but cancellation policy was never discussed. I understand my signature makes me legally liable but feel it’s really unfair. The owner claims I cost them other business blah blah which I really think is bogus, given that my wedding is on a Monday and they intially agreed to come to me for a lot less than standard minimum because they said it’s not a popular day for weddings. Plus they still have 2.5 months to book another wedding! I saw other reviews on YELP from people complaining about the same thing. Money charged for services not performed. Not a good way to make profits.
A deposit should be exactly THAT – a downpayment you lose should you change your mind. It’s not like a custom dress I ordered and cost them money so they’re justified in requiring the full amount – they’re charging me $250 for a service I’m not going to receive and they will not incur a penny for. Of all the vendors I dealt with for my entire wedding, this has been my one and only bad experience. I have no legal grounds for getting my money back but I wanted to warn other potential brides – if you intend to multiple previews, DO NOT sign anything without reading. Based on my bad experience, I would not recommend Design Visage to anyone due to their greedy business practices and poor customer service.

Is there a cancellation clause in your contract? If so, what does it state? Is the issue silent? I think if the issue is silent, then you might just lose your $150 deposit, not for the ENTIRE value of the contract b/c that price is in exchange of them performing their services. Since they are no longer performing services (doing your hair and makeup), I dont think they are entitled to the entire amount.

I would threaten them with a lawyer and reporting them to the better business bureau.

No, unfortunately the owner faxed me a copy of the contract and I have no legal grounds based on that. After listing how I need to finalize the number and the service 2 weeks prior, at the very bottom there’s a little “(*) if you will not need our services contact us within 3 days or payment is due in full for all balances”. 3 days to change my mind after a preview?? I thought this is what previews are for, that you get to try a bunch and compare them. I accept my fault for not reading the fine print, but it doesn’t change the fact in my mind that it’s a bad, unfair business practice. Both their website and the initial deposit form they sent me states my deposit is what holds the date, so the language is contradictory and misleading.
I’m looking at all my other vendor contracts for photography, video, dj, live musicians…The cancellation policy always states losing my DEPOSIT if I cancel, never the full amount. And most of them give me a grace period like 60 days before the wedding to even be able to get my deposit back. I gave Design Visage 75 days advance cancellation notice and agreed to forfeit my deposit which should be more than fair! What they’re trying to enforce is a very unusual and bad policy.
So long story short, they’re legally entitled to my money because of my signature but it doesn’t make it right. They are taking money for which they will not be providing any services in return for. I am mad at myself for not reading the contract, but more mad at them for trying to take advantage of this 🙁
I wish I had read the reviews on Yelp before and had never gone to Design Visage!

I am glad I found this post! I was looking at using Design Visage and was concerenced after reading Yelp! If you dont mind me asking? What ever ended up happening? And if it really was so horrible….who did you end up getting to do youre hair and makeup??

They never granted me a cancellation. As a resolution, I’m sending my Mother-In-Law, SIL and FI’s aunt there to get their hair done that morning and it will have to be my gift to them. I still wish I could get my $250 back and feel the whole thing was bs, but at least this way they’re providing a service in return.
I want to emphasize the hair and makeup they do is not horrible, just their customer service and business practices. Lauren had done a good job for my preview and I’m sure she’ll do a great job on the ladies that day.
Flawless Faces is doing my hair and makeup.
