I’m a mom and my youngest is finally potty trained!!! So no more diaper bag!!!! To celebrate, I want to get myself a nice tote bag (so I can still carry a coloring book and some wipes). I have thoughts of a Louis Vuitton, but I’m not sure I can justify $2000 on a purse. There’s a Kate Spade I like that’s $230 which is more in my price range (and I could probably find at the outlet for a lot less)
Then today, I was at Costco, which got me thinking – do you take your designer bag everywhere? Do you take it to Costco, Target, the park, etc even if it’s sitting in yucky carts or on the ground?

I maintain a 3 purse system. One designer normal day to day purse. One larger purse I use if I need to bring my tablet with me. One wristlet for going out to place where carryng a purse is a burden. The first one goes everywhere.

Of course it depends on the occasion, but in general I will carry a designer bag almost anywhere – including the grocer, Target, the park, etc. But I NEVER put any bag in the front of a cart, as I find it disgusting. I carry it on my shoulder while I’m shopping instead. I do carry smaller bags to fairs or festivals and clutches to fancier occasions, but normally any designer bag will go with me almost anywhere. They’re meant to be worn, IMO, and not locked away only to be taken out for special occasions. If I do that, I don’t feel they’re worth what I paid for them because I would use them so infrequently.

Glasgowbound : I have a few and yes I take them everywhere. I am just careful where I sit it if the place is pretty dirty. Why not? I paid good money for them so yes I take them everywhere.

I do. I don’t carry a Chanel flap every day, but I have a medium Gabrielle that’s my daily (so not overtly Chanel). I have other bags that I carry on weekends when I’m out with my husband or friends.

Canvas bags (LV, Goyard) – yes, I take them absolutely everywhere. Travel, Target, the neighborhood pool, etc.
Leatber bags (Chanel 2.25, Prada Saffiano leather) – no, they go to nicer events & the office. I mean I wouldn’t not go to Target on my way home if I needed something, but they aren’t the bags I use for play dates, errand running days, etc. One because I don’t want to scratch the leather and 2, because they’re heavy. Canvas bags are much better for your back/ shoulders/ hip alignment if you’re going to be out carrying it all day long.

Yup, I use my designer bags everywhere, but I’m mindful of where I plop them down and generally baby them. I also only get everyday bags – durable material that can take a beating too. Like, I’d love a classic Chanel flap, but that wouldn’t be an everyday bag to me and therefore not worth spending that much on. My diaper bag is actually the LV Neverfull. (I would have never picked that for my diaper bag but it was gifted to me for that reason so that’s why it is.) My son is almost 9 months and it still looks good as new. I love that it comes with a little pouch I can use as my wallet/wristlet that I can grab out of it when I run little errands or run out on my own and dont need the rest of his stuff with me.

dgirl715 : don’t mean to threadjack, but what do you think of your Goyard? How has it held up compared to LV?

I have a longchamp bag and I take it everywhere, including putting it on the ground regularly. It’s canvas and easy to clean.

n00bee : I loooove mine. I got it 8 years ago in Paris and had it monogrammed at Goyard in Barney’s. I probably carried it 40% of the time pre-kids and 80% since. I was worried it wouldn’t hold up like LV does since the canvas is so thin and straps are thinner but I haven’t had any problems. The monogram is still in perfect condition.
Just this year I noticed a tiny tear on an inner corner but considering I have lugged laptops, baby crap, used it as my carryon, etc I’m pleased and will definitely buy another when this one eventually dies. I have a color that’s more summery and would like the grey one for all year use.
I’m considering selling some other bags on The Real Real and was impressed that a lot of very used Goyard bags were selling for like 80-90% of retail value.

I have 2 Neverfulls, a Gm in damier ebene and an MM in damier azur. I only use the Gm when we go somewhere with baby all day and I need room for all his stuff. It’s 7+ years old and was my workhorse bag for a couple years. The MM is still in its box 😬
I use my tried and true Longchamp large tote daily (PSA they’re 30% off at Bloomingdale’s at the moment!). I’m not worried about wear and tear on the Neverfulls, I just feel like they’re too fancy for me style/personality-wise on the daily. I see plenty of people with their LVs everywhere though. Whatever floats your boat!

I saw that too on The Real Real I understand buying used, but if it’s only $100 or less under retail (some were $25 under!) I’d just go buy new, unless it was a retired color or something

I have a knockoff Longchamp (hooray for relatives in Hong Kong) that I’m going to try out to see if I even like carrying a tote or if it’s annoying I like the looks of the LV, but like you, I feel I’m not that fancy (although EVERYONE in my town has one). Maybe I just need to go to the store and check them out in person….

dgirl715 : thanks! I’ve been toying with the idea of a goyard…and yes, I noticed the prices on sites like real real, sheesh!

I am not a designer bag person at all and I now blame TheGridMonster : for the fact that I just bought this because LOOK AT THAT COLOR AND ALL THE ROOM AND HELL ITS 30% off!!
