I suppose technically every dress is a designer dress. 😉

When I think designer, though, in general conversation I suppose I’d consider it as a dress from a name you’d recognize easily, like Vera Wang, Monique Lhullier, Maggie Sottero, Pnina Tornai, Austin Scarlett, Watters, Alfred Angelo, Sophia Tolli, Alvina Valenta, Jim Hjelm, Lazaro, Rivini, etc etc etc etc.

@teabiscuit:  Austin was actually ON an ep of SYTTD. 😉 There was a bride there that went in specifically looking for one of his designs. (She ended up going with something else after realizing that his style wasn’t as flattering on her as she’d hoped.)

There is generally a range in prices between a line, usually not much more than a couple grand though. You’ll see more of a price jump between different designers than between dresses in one designer’s line.

For instance, most Maggie Sottero gowns fall somewhere close to the $2000-$3000 range. Most Lazaro gowns hit the $3000-$5000 mark, but some are in the $5000 to $8000 price point.

Pnina Tornai tends to be rather pricey, at the $8000-$10000+ range, though of course there are a few dresses than are slightly less than that.

SYTTD is kind of a skewed view of reality, lol. Most brides aren’t looking to drop $20k on a wedding dress, but if you’re able to, more power to you. Haha.

@teabiscuit:  I’m pretty clueless when it comes to designers too. I know Maggie Sottero – because that’s what my dress is … and I know of Vera Wang as well, and some of the others that they mention on SYTTD all the time.

@rachelmichelle:  My sister, mom and grandma were with me when I got my dress – and they were shocked by how ‘inexpensive it was’ at $2000. I guess they’ve all been watching too much ‘Say yes to the dress.’

SYTTD totally skews reality!

Whenever a bride goes in looking for a dress around $1000-$1500 the consultants are always like “well, that doesn’t give you many options…” I set my dress budget for $1500, but thought it would be okay to go to $2500, because otherwise I “wouldn’t have many options” I was so suprised at how many nice dresses you can get for like $700-$1500. And my dress ended up costing me $500!

But yes, I would cosider “designer” to be the big names a PP mentioned. Like the people that put on huge runway shows, are always on SYTTD type of names.
