I was just reading this blog and noticed how many months ago the posts were written. Just curious have you gotten married yet? Hope all is well and you have/are figuring something out. If you haven’t gotten married maybe you can have your wedding and reception at the church. Some churches have rec rooms you may rent. And possible decor you can borrow!

Why not plan a $1000 wedding from the money your grandmother is giving you? You could have your pastor/ officiant meet you in a park, marry you in front of your ~15 closest friends/family and family and then have dinner in the private room of a restaurant. I know you want the traditional shebang, but the money issues might stress you and your finance out so much that you won’t even enjoy it.
And absolutely put your foot down about your mother trying to invite the entire church. No way you should be going into debt to finance her over-the-top dream.
As for the second half of your question, we are planning a $5K wedding and paying for it from our savings. We are a little older than you and have been working for a while. We are also completely debt-phobic.
