- Wedding: May 2013
Oh boy, the legalities of a destination wedding have been a pain in my ass! Background: FH and I are taking a cruise next month and getting married in port on the third day. We are going all by ourselves, and only my parents know about it.
There was a ton of legal paperwork to send to our on-site planner, and we got a bit of a late start on it. We ended up sending it to the planner for delivery to her two days before it was due to the marriage registry in her country! Yikes! Luckily it was delivered on time, although it cost us over $70 just to mail a bunch of paper!
The day it was due, I got a terrifying email from the planner saying only “Paperwork problem, Call me, it is URGENT!” Of course, my phone plan doesn’t allow international calling, so I was held in horrible suspense while I waited for her to see my email reply and call me. Turned out, our birth certificates didn’t have the proper stamp on them. The planner begged, and was able to get a one-week extension for us to get the right stuff.
The next day, FH and I had to take off work to travel to the capital of our state (luckily only two hours away) to get the proper stamps on the birth certificates. But first, had to get new copies from the counties we were born in! They opened at 8, and the secretary of state office needed them by 10am in order to have them done by the end of the day!! WOW, cutting it close! We made it to the Secretary of State with exactly 10 MINUTES to spare! Paid another $70 to get them expedited.
Finally able to mail them overseas in the afternoon, and yes, paid another $78 for this! But guaranteed delivery by the following Tuesday, which was the day before our extension was up with their government. Tuesday came and went, and our planner still hadn’t received!! Terrifying, to say the least! Thought the wedding was doomed at that point.
Then this morning, finally got the email! They’d been delivered and turned in to the government, who accepted them late as they said they would!
SO WE ARE OFFICIALLY GETTING MARRIED IN MALTA NOW!!!! I’m so relieved after all this horrible stress! And I haven’t been able to tell anyone about it! That’s been the hardest part. I can’t wait to tell people we’re married when we get home again!
Thanks for listening, Bees! And remember, if doing a destination wedding, give the paperwork PLENTY of time!! Without it, no wedding!
