  • Wedding: Hawksnest Cove Beach St John USVI

We got married in St John for 7k (including rings and dress) in the morning so it would be more private. We were married right on the beach And there wasn’t another soul outside of my guests there. My wedding planner does receptions on the beach, but we had a brunch at a restaurant. please let me know if you want any details or contact info.

We chose the USVI because people do not need passports and, like you, I didn’t want a resort.

LittleMissRuca:  Dreams Punta Cana 😀 they have really great wedding packages, you can get married in the beach, get a private venue there, dance, eat and enjoy an all inclusive week on a beachy resort! We were in the same boat as you – didn’t want to invite a ton of people and didn’t want to have to explain that to our families, so this way makes a lot of sense and it’s saving us a lot of money! The 7k I mentioned also includes our flights and the cost of the stay at the resort. Of course our guests have to pay for their own tickets though!

I know that you say you don’t want a really big resort but going to an all inclusive is perferct. It’s funny, I’m in Ohio and planning a destination wedding too btw!!!

We’re going to Sandals and everything that I’ve planned and everyone that I’ve talked to about this has said that it can be private and it can be small and you don’t have to worry about big crowds. You can have it on the beach and it could be a lot less expensive with some of the packages they have. I would start looking into it. They’ve been really great about helping me plan this.

I second Sandals. We are getting married there as well next year. Planning for me so far as been pretty easy as well. They have packages already make up or they have a ton of options so you can make your own. They told me you get an option of having the ceremony on the beach, in the garden or a gazabo and you dont have to decide until you get there. They will meet with you after you arrive and walk you around the resort to show you all the locations. Sandals has a ton of resorts too. I think there are like 7 just in Jamaica! From what I have heard they do a good job at making sure things are private.

You mention FL but have you looked into California? Monterrey and the surrounding areas are fantastic – look at Pacific Grove and Carmel by the Sea. You can also look south into Big Sur. I would skip San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara and LA because of the cost and the crowds, but what about Ventura, Camarillo, or Ojai? All of these cities are smaller and have gorgeous beaches (technically Ojai is about 15 minutes from the beach, but it’s close).

also look into the alabama coast.  it own’t be super warm in winter, but it should be above 70 for the most part.

i TOTALLY understand the non-home wedding. we are getting married in New Olreans in December of this year, with 40 people in attnedance.  For reference, we are having a fairly fancy wedding at the small courtyard/cottage of a much bigger hotel, almost all-inclusive.  ocation for ceremony/reception, full stationed buffet, open bar, wedding cake, linens and such, and suite accomadations, all for about $7500 (after taxes and fees).  OUr location is totally separate from the rest of the hotel, so no weird crowds to deal with, and we expect the weather to be about 60-70 for the event.

look again at vrbo, homeaway, and even air bnb, and ask the rentors if they will allow a small function on the property.  also, look into beach front restaurants in your preferred locations: some may have a “small wedding” option.  also bed-n-breakfasts, small inns, even consider talking to a travel agent.  there are ways to have an affordable destination wedding!

Cruise wedding may not be your thing, but they fit your budget and definitely can be done in Puerto Rico.

I’m with all the bees posting about Sandals! Also, from my research on destination weddings, you may invite 40 people but in reality, maybe 20 will actually make it. I have heard time and again that everyone says they are planning on going but when it gets down to a couple months prior to the wedding, a lot of people drop out… unless you are planning on paying their way, it usually ends up with only those very close to you.

acglandorf:  Which one did you choose? I’m thinking Sandals Montego Bay, but now torn between that and the Bahamas!

DaniAnnie:  We chose Sandals Ocho Rios because Montego Bay is right next to the airport and all the reviews I saw on it said that you can hear the planes taking off and landing all the time. Ocho Rios is about 3 hours from the airport, across the island but there’s a bus that takes you there so you don’t have to worry about figuring out how to get there.

acglandorf:  Thank you for the input! Someone said on another thread that the bus was hot and not comfortable? Do you know if that is true?

DaniAnnie:  I have not heard anything about the bus, so I really don’t know. Sorry :/

Try Destin florida, I think the emerald grand hotel specifically but they have all sorts of hotels and resorts there that would probably work. My fbil was trying to do a destination wedding and that was where they were looking for the wedding. They sent us the link to emerald grand and it’s beautiful. I’m not quite sure what they were asking for but I thought here budget was 15k at the time (not sure if that changed) and they were having alot more people that would be going. I hope that helps! And good luck you will be able to find a place.

Also, I know you said you wanted to have it in the U.S. but I just got back from a dw in cancun. It was very gorgeous and I think that it ended up costing them like four grand. Iher in laws are members at the resort so I am sure that they got a bit of a discount, but I am sure it still would be way below your 20 k budget. It was at the beach palace resort.

Good luck bee! You will find something!
