I am planning a destination wedding and trying to make it as affordable as possible for my guests? What is a cost that guests would expect to pay? I am booking at a nicer hotel that I know the guests would love, but with that and flights being what they are we are looking at $1300-1400 for three nights. The hotel is in Mexico. What are your thoughts?

@Jeizzca: $1300-$1400 for three nights only? Thats really expensive for only three nights! Most places you would pay that for a whole week! If I was a guest I would not pay that for just 3 nights..sorry. My wedding is a destination wedding and our guests each paid about $1200 for a 7 night all incluseive resort

@sweetchiquita12: That’s how I feel. I have been to a destination wedding that was much cheaper. Can I ask where you are booking your wedding? I am trying to find the best deal and was hoping for my guests to spend around $1000-1100 for three nights. How did you do it?!

- Wedding: May 2013 - Walt Disney World
Our Destination Wedding at WDW has a room block at three different hotels (cheap, mid, high rate) with the cheapest being $112 per night (including taxes) and the high-end one being $410 per night (incl. taxes). The high-end one is our reception location and right next door to the ceremony site (the other two hotels are on Disney property so not very far away). Knowing that our reception hotel is pretty high for the majority of our guests, we only blocked out a few rooms (we will be staying there). I do think it is high when you include travel expenses, which is why most of our rooms are blocked at the other two hotels. If I were invited to your wedding, I would try and go but book into a cheaper hotel.

@Jeizzca: Well I chose a cheaper location (Cuba) But i know that location is out of the question for Americans. Also we got a group rate and the airline also gave us a fuel surcharge bonus making the cost per person much cheaper if they booked by a certain day. We had 60 people book with our destination wedding planner and 5 people who booked on there own to come using redtag or expedia who will be arriving on different days

I’ve thought a lot about having a Destination Wedding, but I’d try and make it affordable. A friend of mine wanted to have one and said it may be up to $2,000 for the week. I told her there was no way I’d be able to make it.
All of this depends on what you want. If you are okay with more people not coming, then go for it. But, if you want more of your family/friends to come without an issue, I’d go for a cheaper place.
Maybe talk to some people about what they’d be okay with and decide from there? You may come from a well off family/group of friends.

For three nights hotel for our wedding, the price ranged from $454 to $530 depending on what type of room you wanted. Flight prices were anywhere from$350 to $600 depending on where they were coming from. This is for the Cayman Islands. So I think at a minimum $$800 to 1000 a person is reasonable for a destination wedding. Just be prepared for a lot of people to decline as they don’t want to drop that kind of money to attend a wedding/take a small vacation. Just depends on the person.

i am getting married in Panama – I negotiated with hotel a couple of times, finally got a rate of $160/night for double occupancy room – will fit 2 adults and 2 kids. (it was previously over $200 per person for all inclusive so I made them drop the inclusive rate since we were paying for two nights of dinner for our guests anyway) Another good thing is that they are many direct flights to Panama City from many major cities in US. i contacted a few of the airlines and got a group discount code from two of the airlines for my guests to use. flights range from $450-650 pp roundtrip depending on city.

@Jeizzca: We’re having our Destination Wedding in Cabo. Our travel agent was doing some research and she quoted us at around $1,500 per couple from San Diego and about $2,200 per couple from Chicago. The was for 4 nights I believe!
Edit: I should include that we are staying at an all-inclusive resort!

We are doing a really nice hotel in Mexico and guests have paid anywhere between $1000-$1500 for one week, depending on when they booked. Typical cost was $1250 per person.
The price you quoted seems expensive for only 3 days, but maybe flights to Mexico are much more expensive from Philiy than from Vancouver.
