I’m getting married in Mexico at an all inclusive resort in a few weeks. Am I the only one who’s finding everything at the resort that’s not included in the package to be an ungodly rip-off?
I was thinking about putting on a bonfire party one nigth and they want to charge $45 per person!!!!!!!!!!! For marshmallows, gramcrackers, and firewood? What on earth? I can understand a set up cost of a few hundred dollars, but why would they need to charge $45 per head? The incremental cost is probably less than $5.
So far I’ve found evrything outside of the package to be as expensive as it would be here at home, or even more expensive. I really get the sense that at these resorts the word “wedding” translates into “rip off.”
Jesus. I’m just a bit annoyed. Am I the only one who feels like I’m being gouged?

@cbgg: This is sick isn’t it? They nickel and dime the hell out of us!! I went through something similar with our rehearsal dinner we wanted to have it in the beach at the hotel(venue) we are all staying at over 50 bucks a head!! Really? For a gross BBQ buffet? No thanks… We’re going with a close restaurant. Can you negotiate with them?

@cbgg: After being invested in this idea of getting married away at Iberostar Rose Hall Suites in Jamaica, I completely gave up on the entire destination wedding. After planning for a month, choosing a location and all of the bells and whistles, it felt like we were spending WAY to much and the idea of an affordable destination weddins became, to me, more like a myth.
I just couldn’t imagine NOT doing a welcome party for my guests who would have travelled so far, using the resort photography, less than adequate details such as flowers and decor or settling with the basic package that only accommodates 8 guests including yourself.
It was a sad thing to decide…and I cried. But, I quickly got over it. I had to realize that it was out of my budget, in the larger scheme of things it was just spilled milk (I am still marrying the man of my dreams), and the wedding industry is a money institution first and foremost. Annoyed by my childhood dream deferred…but life goes on.
So I’m getting married in Brooklyn…a semi destination for this jersey girl and her family. What did you decide to do?

I’m going to get back to her and see if she’ll negotiate on price. If not I’ll look for something off resort. Maybe see if I can do a sunset cruise or a big group snorkeling excursion or something (which would be pricey but maybe a better value).
But hey, at least I’m going to Mexico!
