We recently got engaged (actually in St. Johns) and this week I really started doing some wedding research! We are from Chicago so intially my research was for venues here.Nothing really stood out and it was hard to find a unique place that wasn’t overdone, or cheesy. The biggest problem we face is my fiance comes from a verrry large family (his mom is one of 12) and since they are all fairly close to Chicago the likelihood of everyone coming is a very real possibility 😉
All in all we both don’t want that large, over the top wedding-just not us. However, I have a feeling if we stay here we’ll end up with 200 guests, at a hotel, spending close to $60k..
Getting to my point ha– soo we got to talking about maybe doing it in St. Johns last night– which would def. keep it small, its beautiful, pretty easy to get to, and if we’re going to spend all that money in Chicago– why not have an awesome beach wedding:) I looked into Caneel Bay (which we stayed when we got engaged) and the Westin.
Has anyone ever planned a wedding in USVI– or a destination wedding for that matter. Trying to weigh the pro/cons so any advice would be awesome!! I want to make sure its easy for everyone coming to our wedding! Looking at March 2014..

@lucy29: My hubby and I spent a day in St. Thomas! Gorgeous place! (though the driving was a bit confusing). Also, I know you said you want a smaller more intimate wedding, but there are alot of places in the Chicago suburbs that would be much cheaper than Chicago proper to host a wedding. I lived in Gurnee a few years ago, and they have alot of nice arboretums and things. You could even go an hour north to Kenosha, and things will be priced MUCH cheaper. Just a thought!

Congrats! I got married in St. Thomas this past December. We also got engaged in USVI (on St Thomas) and was running into a very similar problem as you because we both come from large families and would have ended up spending a fortune on a wedding we didnt really want.
My advice is to get a wedding planner from the USVI. I used Janelle at Island Bliss and it was perfect and super easy. She took care of everything and i didnt have to worry about alot of the details. We ended up cruising to the island and getting married at Lindquist Beach while we were docked. Feel free to message me with any questions!

@lucy29: Welcome to the bee! I got married in St Thomas in October at Sugar Bar Resort and Spa! There were 25 of us in all……..lots of work planning a Destination Wedding but so worth it in the end!
If you get married in St Thomas Blue Glass Photography is amazing! Also High Def VI for video (hes pretty much the best on the island) and Sugar and Spice for hair and makeup……..they are all GREAT!
Good luck and happy wedding planning!
