I didn’t have a destination wedding, but a lot of bees on here did, so I’m going to bump this to see if they can help you out. Congratulations and good luck! 🙂

@weaselbeans:  Hi, I am currently planning my wedding in Prague, I live in New zealand. The way I got started was by locating a wedding planning company, but to be honest I have done most of it myself!

yup. number one thing to do is find a planner who gives u unlimited email contact or phone calls. either that, OR find a hotel/resort that plans the wedding for u and gives u a day-of coordinator.

depending on how much control u want over planning aspects like food, flowers, decor, musicians, etc will help u determine if u want to let a resort give u a package wedding or if u want to work with an independent planner and make ur own planning choices for those things.

i chose to work with a planner local to my destination (st thomas) and she is working to make my wildest wedding dreams come true. altho she also offers packaged weddings for a fixed dollar amount that i could have chosen as well. but i would have had less control over how it all looked. i let her know my budget and we are working within that.

my recommendation is to go that route, however, many many brides have gone the package route or used the aide of a resort and still had absolutely gorgeous weddings.

setting a budget is another huge thing to get u started. we didnt factor in anything other than the ceremony and reception in the beginning which was a huge mistake. now we r almost 3x over budget if u can even call it a budget. id recommend being honest with ur planner and make SURE they understand that ur budget HAS to be able to cover EVERYTHING which DOES include things other than the ceremony and reception. sometimes i think when u tell a planner that ur budget is 10k, they think thats what they can spend ALL of that, when theres a ton of stuff that YOU will do on ur own that will cost money like invitations, apparal, honeymoon stuff, rings, e-photos, bridal party gifts, just on and on and on.

read books and prepare urself! congrats on getting married!
