@Cola262: To be honest I wouldn’t travel 17 hours for Jamaica.  What about Tahiti… (I’ll be traveling about 17 hours to go there!) I’ve seen some really great deals- even ones where they offer FREE AIR from LA!

@Cola262: Have you looked into belize? There are some great resorts there and it shouldn’t take you as long to get there!

What if you did a cruise?  The meals included..all you can eat, just pay for drinks.  And they have all lengths for cruises so you can make a long weekend out of it and save vacation days.

What about Cabo? Fiance and I went last summer and plan to go for a short honeymoon. I know it’s MX, but really touristy and safe…and a quick 2 hr flight from LAX.

Unfortunately I don’t know that you’ll find a direct flight from LAX to a Caribbean island :/ However …… I think you can get there (or close to there) with less travel time than 17 hours!!!!!!

My Fiance and I went to the Bahamas a few years back. We flew out of LAX with a direct flight no layovers to Miami (MIA, I believe). It was a five hour flight, with the three hour added time it was eight hours travel time. We had a three hour layover, then an hour flight on a quaint little 20-seater something plane to Nassau. That’s 12 hours… five less travel! Also if you luck out you won’t have such a long layover like we did. Our trip was kind of booked last minute, so we just dealt with it. You have some more time to check out flights. HTH!

I don’t know if you can find direct flights to Costa Rica. It is much closer than many of the places you mentinoned. We stayed in a great place that specializes in Honeymoons.

I know there is so much trouble in Mexico, but I hadn’t heard about too many problems in the Cabo San Lucas area. That is close to you and has so much to do there with great beaches, resturants, etc.

Or you could go the other direction. Have you been to Canada?

Good luck!

Are you set on a beachy vacation?  You could come up to Canada and visit Vancouver and Whistler.  Or go to Banff, Alberta which is beautiful.
