I wanted to share a little about our story opening a business as newlyweds. It’s good!
DH got into the body piercing industry about 5 years ago. (He still works a day job but started body piercing for a reputable shop on nights and weekends.) I have a public health background and as we learned more about the industry, he and I wanted to improve the health and safety standards of the local piercing industry … but the owners of all of the existing shops said the high-quality jewelry, sterilization equipment, and safer cleaning supplies were too expensive.
So, DURING OUR HONEYMOON (how romantic ) we started talking about how we could open a body piercing studio on our own. We’d exclusively use the BEST jewelry and SAFEST methods. Six months later, our honeymoon daydream became a reality and we opened our business called Classy Body Art (www.classybodyart.com).
Everyone thought we were crazy! Not only were we newlyweds but we were opening a business that forced us to work long hours on opposite schedules. 🙁
BUT it’s been worth it!!! Owning a business together forces us to communicate about everything (especially money) a lot. Plus, we carve out ‘us’ time and have a Sunday routine that is really special to us.
Our small business is growing too! In fact, we’re in a local business plan competition in case you want to vote for us. http://www.alloveralbany.com/startups/vote
DH hasn’t quit his day job yet but our projections indicate he will be able to pierce full-time in about a year.
