- Wedding: July 2012 - The Gables Inn, Santa Rosa, CA
So, I really want to celebrate this but I don’t have anyone I can tell about it really…
The last time I had similar news (in April, detailed below) I tried to share my joy with my sister and her response was “You don’t have to rub it in you know”. This really hurt my feelings because to be honest I just wanted someone to be happy with me, but she took it as me flaunting our good fortune; which I guess I could have seen coming if I’d thought about it since she and her husband struggle a lot with money and it’s somewhat of a sore spot in their marriage…
Anyway, DH and I both graduated college in 12/2010. We spent the first 7 months out of school scrimping and saving so we buy a house in 7/2011. We then spent the next year planning (and paying for) our wedding. In conjuction with that, we’ve both worked really hard to establish ourselves in our respective careers. For Darling Husband, that meant taking the Professional Land Surveyor’s licensing exam. Most people have never heard of this, and it would be very long and boring to explain, but basically it’s like a specialized law degree infused with a ton of engineering (but in CA at least, it’s harder to pass than the bar exam).
Anyway, last April he passed!!! This was super exciting for him personally & professionally, as well as both of us financially. Because when we have kids, we both want me to stay home with them until they start school at least. This is only possible if our finances are in such a place that we can live comfortably on his income and still have enough left over for emergency funds, college funds, and baby expenses.
Well– Since April his company has been doing a lot of talking, but not taking a lot of action. Yesterday they finally signed the paperwork!!! He is getting a $20k raise, as well as company stock that’s currently worth about $24k (and hopefully in the future a lot more!!!). This is 1/2 way to compensating for my income already!
I am super excited about this because it means that we will be able to accellerate our debt pay-off schedule, and hopefully be able to have everything paid off by the end of next year if not before. I am literally bouncing in my seat at the possibility! We’ve had to make a lot of tough decision over the last 2 years and have skipped a lot of fun opportunities in order to get where we are, so it’s amazing to finally be seeing those choices paying off in a BIG way!
