Hi Ladies, I am in serious need of help!! My boyfriend is planning on proposing whenever he comes home on leave, he has told me to start looking at rings, and to make him a list of what I like. The only problem is that, I have realized just how expensive diamonds are. He really wants to get me a 2 carat, but that is just not realistic with the price of diamonds. So, I have been researching like crazy for the best deals for his money. I have came across Moissanites, Amora gems, and Amora Moissanite. I think that they are all beautiful alternatives to a diamond, and all are in our budget. My problem is picking one that is most diamond like, and one that looks the most real. I don’t want to look like im walking around with a fake diamond on my hand, and I don’t want to pass the gem off as a diamond, if people ask I would be honest. I just don’t want people to look at it and wonder if its real or fake. I wear a size 7.5-8 ring and would love opinions on which gem would be the best, and the best size gem for my finger, as well as reccomendations for places to buy from both for a wedding band and the gem. Thank you all so much, I know this post is lengthy but I really need the help!!

chelsey0707 : Hi bee! I am not too knowledgable regarding Moissanites but from what I understand the hearts and arrows and the forever one look the most like a diamond and their cost differential from a standard moissanite to a high quality one is relatively low.
I can really help you with the size though. I wear a size 7 finger and struggled with the size of diamond that I wanted within my sweetie’s budget. I have blocky fingers with larger knuckles. I would have had to sacrifice quality for carat to get a 2 carat so instead I went with a 1.35 carat round brilliant, I color, SI2, Excellent cut with a petite pave halo band. I really am happy with my choice because the finger coverage is lovely π
If you like solitaires, a 2 carat would be beautiful and the cost is much more affordable for the Moissanites. π Here is my ring. Good luck in your choice!

clementsbee : Thank you for replying to my post, and for your advice and pictures!! Your ring is beautiful!!! Yes, I want a solitaire thats why im kind of hesitant on size of the gem, my fingers are almost the size of yours & I dont want to go too small, but I also dont want to go to big to where it looks like it would be fake. Could you tell me where you ordered from??? Along with your bands? I would love to look on their website. Your ring is beautiful, I think I might really like that size just without the halo. Thank you again!!

honeybadgered : I love that!! I think that would look beautiful in the solitaire style that I love! Thank you for posting the pictures for me to look at, I love that size. Now i dont feel like that would look too big or fake. Could you tell me where you bought it from? & the color grade & cut (D,F,VS2, etc..)
Thank you for helping me!!

I will put in a vote for the Amora Gem. I think it’s the most diamond-like, but they seem to be hard to get ahold of. Moissanite FB may be a better option because it’s more readily available.
As for a not too small, but not over the top size… Obviously that’s personal choice, but I guess there DOES seem to be a socially acceptable/desirable coverage percentage, and I’d put it anywhere 40%-50%. It seems you’ll get questions about when you’ll “upgrade” if you’re much below that, and comments regarding gaudiness if you’re much over.
Here’s a coverage chart to reference. Personally, I’m a 4.5 ring size, and will be getting a ~2.4 ct round diamond because I don’t wear much jewelry so I don’t mind the extra bling of the larger size on my ering. At 60% coverage, I’m sure I’ll get comments and looks but I don’t really care. π

chelsey0707 : For reference, I have a size 9 ring finger, so I didn’t mind getting a larger stone. I am also having it set as a solitaire on a channel set band, with matching channel set wedding ring.
I bought my stone from Moissaniteco.com. I ordered a loose stone, and I picked a setting at a local jewelers.
The cut is H&A, E color, and VVS1 clarity.

chelsey0707 : Personally, knowing my finger size, if I were you and wanted a solitaire, I’d probably go for the full 2 carat. The finger coverage will be great and the size with not be overly flamboyant π I don’t think most people will see it and assume its not a real diamond and if they do, then π on them! lol!
I actually got my ring from a local jeweler called Robbins Brothers here in Houston. My ering and band are Simon G. High quality and I’ve never had a problem with the pave diamonds falling out π
Here is their link: http://www.robbinsbrothers.com/ and the link to my exact setting http://www.robbinsbrothers.com/Engagement-Rings/Ring-With-Sidestones/Simon-G–i53815.ring

honeybadgered : I looked on their site at the loose gems, how did you get to choose the specifics. For me it seemed to just choose the diamond for me, maybe im not doing it correctly. Thank you for your help.

chelsey0707 : My diamond was purchased from the same store. When we got my ring, I didn’t know moissanite even existed so I got a real diamond.
