I asked for a 1 carat solitare and he surprised me with a 1.5! It was more than I asked for, plus he said that was the first ring, and it will get bigger in the near future. So lucky………:)

@littlemissmango: I had exactly the same experience. My Fiance got me a D colour solitaire Engagement Ring, at first it was perfect for my dainty finger, but somehow it got smaller and smaller. I guess I love the bling and we ended up changing the setting to halo with pave band. Now it sparkles like crazy that it almost blind my eyes everytime I look at it under spot lights. I love it and I wouldn’t want any size bigger than this!

I thought I wanted a .5 carat or maybe a .75 but ended up with 1 carat.  I though it looked big at first but once you get used to it it really doesn’t!

I wanted about a caret.  The practical side of me was thinking about .9 ish to stay under the magic 1ct where prices start to go crazy.  The irrational side of me dreamed of at least 1.5 cts.  Fiance surprised me with about 1.3… a perfect balance of my pracital and irrational side.

For my first wedding, I used a diamond I inherited from my grandmother, which was 2.75 carets.  In the course of the twenty years that marriage lasted, I realized how much I disliked wearing a large diamond everywhere.  Any time I would go on vacation, or leave my office after dark, or be in a less safe neighborhood, I was having to think about what to do with it.  For years after that marriage ended, I had nightmares in which I was trying to hide that ring from criminals.  For my second wedding, I decided not to have an engagement ring at all, and to use a plain gold wedding band.

I thought I wanted a carat but they all looked so large on my fingers! The salespeople in most of the jewelery stores we went in kept trying to talk me into bigger carats, but they looked just too big on my hand. I ended up with a .77, which was just perfect for my hand πŸ™‚

I had no say in the size, my husband picked out my ring. I think he picked the perfect stone. It looks awesome on me and I think if he’d spend much more I would’ve been kind of annoyed πŸ™‚

The ring i chose actually had a wee center stone (.34 Carats).  Fiance had it custom-made and the jeweller took it up to .54 Carats.  I have tiny fingers, and anything bigger would have looked awkard, especially with the design of the ring.  I love it πŸ™‚

I had no say in mine, I always thought I’d want bigger than what I actually got but it turns out it’s perfect at just under 1 carat.

I suppose I’m old-fashioned and traditional, but I didn’t have any part in picking out my ring.  He merely asked me what shape of stones I liked (round or princess) and what type of metal for the band.  He chose the size, clarity, price, and design.  I think he did a perfect job of picking out my ring.  I honestly would have chosen a smaller diamond/cheaper price because I wouldn’t have considered myself to be worth as much $ as he spent (I’m quite frugal).  His comment was, “I wanted to give you the best I could afford because you deserve it.”  I didn’t have a good answer to that. lol

So cute. I had a similar statement with my Fiance. As for my ring… I always thought my Dear Fiance would pick it out, but he was sooo insecure of getting something I wouldn’t like. During this time I must have seen every ring in the book. I finally gave in after weeks & weeks of him asking me about details. I always liked the Victoria ring in aquamarine from Tiffanys, didn’t want to do diamonds. So that was no longer available and we found out it’s not a daily wear ring! Plus the similar ones were too big for my taste.

I asked him what he thought was nice. Basically he thought Princess Di’s ring replica was nice. Not for me. I told him clean lines and very simple.

A sapphire solitare. Well he was still questioning EVERYTHING. So we went shopping together and could find nothing I liked and I didn’t want custom. So after a while I figured, the longer I wait on this …the longer he’ll be in proposing! LOL

So I told him I hate big diamond solitares, that I was looking for a wink in my diamond. Nothing over .40 something more in the .25/.35 range. (Of course PERFECT C’s except for carat! IF and the whole nine was important to me for that special wink)

He was ruined by SA’s and other girls opinions on larger rings! He may have gotten me larger than what I wanted, but I’m happy because ultimately he made the choice πŸ™‚
