@KB8511: Both of those diamonds have great stats. I would go with the larger one for sure since the differences between the two (aside from the size) wont be very obvious unless you are holding the two right next to each other….and shes not going to walk around with both on her finger to compare. The larger one is what I would get.

what size ring does she wear? Size of the finger is important when it comes to carat size. people always comment on the size of my ring, because they think it is larger. In reality it is .88 carat weight on a 4.5 size rinif my finger size and the fact that it is an oval makes it look huge.
There isn’t a huge difference between the two stones you are looking at, in quality though.

I personally prefer quality over size. Both of those rings are good quality though, so I know a lot of girls would prefer the bigger rock. For me, I’d take a lot more pride in how insanely high of a grade that smaller stone is!

Depends on what you think is important. I had a 1.07 G, VVS2 and swapped it out for an H 1.5, SI2 and I’m much, much happier. Both sparkled like no tomorrow but I wanted size.

In this case… I would definitely go for the larger diamond. The differences between the two (regarding the other specifications) are not even remotely visable to the naked eye.

I personally prefer quality over size. A small, high quality diamond will light up a whole room but a big lower quality diamond just looks like a big rock on your hand.

There is nothing worse than a large diamond that looks yellow and is just poor quality. Compare two together and it is so obvious, and anyone who knows anything about diamonds could pick it out in a second. Buying a large diamond just for the sake of having a large diamond is a BAD move.
My Fiance and I spent forever researching diamonds before we picked mine and the most important feature is cut (even a high quality diamond will look like crap with a bad cut). I have a D-flawless and it’s beautiful – pure white, no inclusions, great cut, amazing sparkle. I’d take my just over half carat perfect diamond over a large imperfect diamond any day!

@KB8511: Brian, IMO bigger is better in a genuine diamond but only when it truely sparkles. There are many diamonds out there, would not limit myself to those above but do side by side comparasions of many. Would also choose something GIA graded (most stringent “generic” lab) to accurately compare. Would measure the HCA scores as well. Here is the info on that:
Your eye visualizing the diamonds under different lighting is crucial. Knowiing what I know today, would not go lower than a G in color, nor SI1 in clarity, excellent cut, by GIA standards.
Good luck, don’t forget to show us the pic!

The 1 ct sounds very nice in itself so go for that one. Whenever guys come on to post for help I think it’s the sweetest thing!

Fiance got quality over size –
quality of a diamond is always worth more money than the size of the diamond in the end, especially for insurance purposes.

@BlondeMissMolly: +1 my thoughts exactly!

i would usually say quality over size but in this case it would appear that the larger size is still great quality. vvs2 is very good and so is the cut. H isnt bad either. it might depend on the cut of stone you are looking for and if warmth might bother you. are you loooking at RB?

WOW! I did not expect this many responses in less than 24 hours!! Her ring size is 5.5. She is a down-to-earth type of woman. Although, I know she wouldn’t turn away a larger diamond if it was presented to her.
I have done a good job of listening to what she likes and doesn’t like. So I know the ring will be a more traditional type of solitaire ring. I am leaning towards a platinum Tapered Trellis type of setting:
While an almost perfect diamond would be AMAZING, I am realizing that there won’t be much of a difference to the naked eye. So, I can get a diamond with a little lower clarity and color, higher carat size and still pay the same or a little less and it will still look amazing.
Thank you all for your opinions!! You have offered a lot of insight.

I say go for the 1 carat, both stones seem to be extremely good quality, and 1 carat is imo not too big, but big enough to make a girl happy! The .5 would be too small for me, but that’s my personal preference. I dont think that you can tell the difference in quality with the naked eye between these two stones, unless she’s a jeweler and will be studying it with a loupe 🙂 i never met a lady who complained that her diamond is too large!
