Do you think most people can REALLY tell the difference between a diamond and a moissanite? Forever Brilliant. I mean one that is set in a ring, not being examined with a loop.

I think you might want to add if the cost was not factored in, On your poll. If someone had a large amount of disposable income to spend on diamonds, then for sure most would, I would think.
Both are pretty and i’m in favour of whatever makes people happy.
Time to brace ourselves, everyone… 😉
I can tell the difference in most lightings, but I love my moissy and spend a lot of time looking at it. I think in photographs it’s really difficult to tell, but the light play is when it becomes a little more apparent. I absolutely prefer the look of moissanite. I joked with boyfriend-at-the-time when I took him to see both stones that the diamonds looked “dead inside” in comparison. And now I’m going to regret saying that given this thread.
I probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. I’ve never seen a moissanite in person but would like to:)
In general I don’t think people can tell the difference, because normally people aren’t looking for it. Outside of the Bee, Moissanite isn’t really commonly known about yet.
I don’t think one is prettier than the other. Both/ALL stones are pretty in their own right.
I prefer moissanite over a diamond. Not just because of the cost, but because there is more brilliance and fire, which I think is more beautiful.
There was a post on pricescope about this (I can’t seem to find it now) – basically, almost everyone said they could never tell a moissanite vs. diamond on someone’s hand, not doing a crazy inspection of it. I think there is a very small percentage of people who actually know what moissanite is and could maybe tell the difference. But really, I think there’s hardly anyone who would just see a ring on someone’s hand and confidently be able to say, “that’s a moissanite”. Especially since some lower-quality diamonds may have some of the qualities typically associated with moissanite (such as a warmer color). Even some jewelers can’t tell the difference.
@sporting: I don’t know that one looks “better” than another. They look different. I like the look of my grandmother’s diamond ring when I wear it. I like the look of my moissanite engagement ring too. For me, the crazy flashes of color my moissy gives off are more appealing to me, but I can totally see how that is distracting, unappealing or ‘fake looking’ to some people.
@sporting: Uh oh, I bet this thread is going to blow up and then get shut down at some point. . . these always do.
I couldn’t vote in your poll as there is not an option for my thoughts on the matter. I don’t think either looks BETTER or worse than the other, but I certainly find them very different in appearance. Diamonds are icier and refract fewer colors (and I find them less sparkly generally), whil moissanites are a little warmer and refract every color of the rainbow in an extremely dramatic way.
And no, I don’t think most people can tell the difference between moissy and diamond in a ring on someone’s finger. I don’t think people in general care about what type of stone is on another person’s hand. However, once you have seen moissanite in real life, I think it is possible, given some time staring at someone’s jewelry, to guess at which stone it is since they do definitely look different.
@sporting: I just saw this video the other day it was very interesting

@goblueca: funny, because my friends have remarked numerous times that my moissanite looks like a very high quality diamond. I would take that as a compliment, but I prefer the look of moissanite over diamonds any day.
I know most people don’t keep up with developments in moissanite world, but the new rough being used for them is becoming whiter and whiter. “Forever Brilliant” moissanite doesn’t even go through an enhancement process any more, because it’s already white enough from the start.
i can tell, but i don’t think either looks better than the other. it’s personal preference. i like anything that sparkles, so i like both.
