My tactless cousin once held her very high quality 1.5 carat round diamond next to my one carat moissanite. I honestly couldn’t tell the difference, except for the size.

I picked Can’t tell the difference because I don’t know if I’ve seen a Moissy in person. I feel like I have once while i was at a bar. The lady sitting next to me had what looked like a radient cut diamond but it sparkled like CRAZY. I’ve never seen anyones diamond do that. Since I’ve seen so many moissanites here on the bee I figured that it MIGHT be one. But I never asked, because that’s rude, so I’ll never know. All i know is that it was really really pretty and I wanted it lol.

I didn’t vote. But I CAN tell the difference usually. (Only because I POUR over ring forums and am very knowledgeable.) I don’t think one is better than another. Every gem has it’s strong selling points. I can tell, but I don’t care either way. I love my ring and don’t spend too much time glossing over strangers unless it is a show off post online. 🙂

This debate will end only when the Moissanite retailers themselves stop comparing it to diamonds. When something is marketed as having (such and such qualities) as compared to a diamond, and it’s created in a lab, one can only come to the conclusion that it was created to simulate a diamond, except with enhanced features.

I don’t think most people can tell.  Not everyone notices or is into diamonds and diamond alternatives.

Online, I can recognize some cuts.  The cushions and round brilliants have a splintery facet look about them.  The square brilliant has a really distinctive cut.  I don’t believe I know anyone in real life who has moissy, so I haven’t had the chance to really be able to test whether I can tell the difference or not.  I will say my moissanite ring does look different from diamonds of similar size – it throws a lot more rainbows.  in certain lighting it’s almost ridiculous how rainbow-y it looks.  I love that about it, but I see how some people might find it “fake looking” and prefer the whiter shine of diamonds.

@sporting:  I think they each have their distinct look.

The few moissanites I’ve seen in real life I’ve been able to spot right away.

I just think you should go with what appeals to you more!

    Good luck picking!

Most people don’t notice the difference.  That’s because most people don’t care about what someone else is wearing on their finger.

I do have one friend that really does care about gems, but she’s a gemologist.

But that apple pie looks really good.

@hersheykiss2087:  There is no way that you could think that diamonds look better if you have actually seen a Moissanite. GO LOOK AT ONE!

Researched moissanite extensively before I got engaged. Saw it in multiple stores and met a few people that had one.

When I saw it the first time I was very dissapointed because I didn’t like the look. And I still don’t. So I’m happy with my diamond.

Some people prefer diamonds and other prefer moissanite but saying that you could never prefer a diamond over a moissanite once you see one is a gross generalisation.

I have to giggle when ladies say that they can “definitely tell” the difference. I own both and can not tell the difference. Much more importantly, I’ve had lengthy conversations with two different jewelers who have said that neither their expert eyes, or their loupe can tell the difference, and not even their former testing machinery.  It’s only their newest equipment that can now distinguish. Both stones are gorgeous and brides should relish and cherish whatever they own. I can’t help but sense though, that the gals stating they “can definitely tell” want, on some level, to make moissy-wearers feel a little “less than”. Hope not, but I can’t help but perceive it that way.  Just enjoy and cherish your rings, ladies! Whatever they are!

Honestly, I am really surprised that a thread about such a controversial topic on WB asking OUT RIGHT which stone is better is still going. I made a silly thread about vegetable jewelry that got closed, but this one is allowed to go on and on :

Something just came over me…how can we even be sure that SHE is wearing genuine diamonds?…This is the internet and anything could be “made up”!

NOT that it’s anything important…who cares?

Wow ths had to be the most entertaing thing Ive read in a while! My input is this, If we too the money aspect out of all Gems, stones, and metal, and natural or lab created here for a moment, (That means that its all free there is no cost or way to know if it is natural or lab in this statment) Hell We will even take away anyway of knowing the name of what you are looking at! Not everyone would pick a diamond! With only having the option to look with your eyes and having no info outside of that. Each person would pick whats most appealing to their eye and personal taste. I do own a diamond, but thats only because its what I thought (A ring as a whole) was prettiest to me! If you took the cost and everything out of it I bet everyone would shock themself at least once in what they picked! 🙂
