(pictures are at the bottom of the post; I apologize if anything is poorly formatted, I have never posted before)
I’ve been lurking the ring boards for quite a while now, and the time has now come for me and my boyfriend to look at rings as we (hopefully) intend to get engaged this year.
7 months ago, I tried on this gorgeous diamond ring at a local jeweller and absolutely fell in love with it. The problem is that it’s $5000 cad. My boyfriend and I haven’t exactly set a budget, but we are always trying to save money, and I never imagined myself wanting a ring that was so much money.
So I have been trying to find something else that is less expensive that I love as much as this diamond ring. I’ve considered several gemstones and finally found this ruby ring at Costco. The price is drastically lower at $1900 cad.
I do really like this ruby ring, and I could probably love it. But it doesn’t make my heart skip a beat like the diamond does. I know I could probably grow to love it, as I really do like it, and it would be much more practical for us to get something cheaper. We just bought a house this past summer, and there are things we want to eventually get done renovation or fix-up wise.
My dilemma is obviously which one I should go for. I’m so torn. I’m wondering if anybody has any tips for helping to make the decision. And I have no idea which ring even looks best on me to be honest.
Other notes to be aware of:
– the diamond ring has a 0.5 ct center stone (G colour, VS1)
– the ruby ring has a 5×7 ruby in the center
– we bought our first house in July and our anniversary is also in July, so the ruby center stone would have some sentimental value
– my boyfriend thinks diamond rings are boring and impractical and much prefers the look of gemstones
– I’ve already offered to split the cost of the ring with him (it’s his engagement too) so the financial burden wouldn’t fully fall on him
– Neither of us have any student loans or debt and we both own our vehicles, and our mortgage is very doable
Sorry for the long post – I’m just extremely torn, and I’m a type-A person who believes that worrying incessantly over an small issue like this is necessary for some reason.
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to offer any insight!

The ruby version is gorgeous! Oval halo rings with diamond centers are everywhere right now, but the ruby would stand out. I also love the July connections — so romantic!

I voted for the diamond because it sounds like you truly love it and personally I’d be worried about scratching a ruby. But when I read that the diamond was only a .5 center stone for 5k, that took me aback. I know it’s less in CAD than in USD, but that seems a bit pricey to me for the carat size, although perhaps the carat weight of the setting explains the price. Have you looked into whether you could get a similar ring from an online retailer like James Allen?

I’m voting diamond because you love it so much more. I would keep looking at some more diamonds and see if maybe there are some places with the stone you could compromise. Maybe slightly lower clarity or colour?
Is it the halo you like about it? What is the metal? Is it platinum? Could it be set in white gold? Could you get a solitaire and upgrade your setting later?
You don’t have to do any of these things if you don’t want to. Maybe visit different independent jewellers and see if that is really the best they can do as far as similar rings for prices. We visited several before I found one that had the knowledge level I demanded and that I felt I could trust with my business for life.

You should get a ring that you love, but $5000 for a 0.5ct ring sounds ridiculously overpriced.
You could probably get a similar ring made for much less than the one you tried on from somewhere like James Allen or elsewhere, and maybe you could encorporate some rubies into the pave or something, so that it has elements that you and boyfriend like.

Hey Bee, as some of the others have suggested you should consider looking at online retailer, james allen for instance has an incredibly similar setting and depending on the diamond spec, a VS2 0.5ish carat diamond version would be about half the price of the ring you fell in love with.
This does of course depend on whether you are comfortable buying online or not 🙂
I do personally preffer the ruby, but that’s just a personal preference for gemstones 🙂

I prefer the diamond halo but that is pricey. If the amount is a concern for you, I think you need to look online. I know if you buy over the border, you will have to figure in taxes as well which can add quiet a bit to the price. This is a very common halo design though. I would look at Loupe Troop, Diamond Bistro and Pricescope Pre-loved, either for a loose diamond oval or an oval halo in that type of setting. I don’t know a ton of online jewelers in Canada but you might want to try Gerry the Jeweler.

Have you considered moissanite instead of a diamond?
Personally I love the way the ruby pops

They are both beautiful rings but I agree with others that the diamond is way overpriced! You can get a full carat halo for that if not a little cheaper if you just take time and research. As another bee mentioned also have you thought about moissanite? You could get an identical ring for half the cost or even a lab diamond. I think you should look around and do some price comparing because that .5ct is way overpriced.
the ruby is also stunning but I would be scared it would scratch easily and look worn down in no time. But you should get what you like and it seems like you love the diamond so I suggest going that route or you could end up never being satisfied until you have one.
goodluck/congrats and I hope you find your perfect ring!!!

While reading your post I was already thinking that I would vote for the diamond, but then I saw the pics. While the diamond ring is nice, that ruby ring is GORGEOUS and it looks amazing on your finger- much better then the diamond does. Honestly that ruby is stunning!

A ruby is 9 on the Mohs scale. I don’t think you have to worry about scratching it. Personally, if the ruby is bright like pigeons blood I’d go with that.

If you love the diamond you should look for a diamond. I do like the ruby ring as well but it doesn’t seem to be what you want.
what does your boyfriend mean by “impractical”? The price I hope.
Here’s an example of an alternative. Dunno how it works with taxes though. 3567CAD

I personally think the ruby is gorgeous and unique, but you’re the one who has to love it.
I second other PP’s to say look online for a cheaper diamond or moissanite.

Since you live the diamond go with the diamond! Just try looking around for a similar setting because $5,000 seams very high. Try James Allen or Blue Nile! Also try a lab created diamond (significantly cheeper!)

Wow $5,000 for 1/2 ct sounds crazy expensive! I’d shop around. What about the same style with moissanite?
