Yep. I just had a customer come in and say that to me.
I noticed that she was wearing a ring on her left hand (she is a regular) and asked if she recently got engaged. She said yes, and I began to oOh and aAh over her blue sapphire ring! It was beautiful. After I complimented her ring 4 or 5 times she looks to me and says “You know, it’s not a diamond because I think diamonds are f***ing tacky and hideous.” Hmmm…. I am pretty sure it’s obvious I have a diamond ring on my left finger.
I can’t believe the nerve of some people! Who says that?
I didn’t take it personal… it just amazed me that she said that.

WTF?!? Who says that? Yikes….she sounds like quite the catch 😉

Wow. You should have waved your ring at her and said Excuse me!!. That is just so rude. What a cow!

@luckyprincess: Haha the poor divil that bought her the ring might come to regret it yet!

A cow indeed.. if you were not at risk of getting fired, I would ‘Moooo’ the next time she comes in. hehe 🙂

i think she might be channeling her aggression to some of the comments she might have received from others over her beautiful sapphire ring

Her defensive nature makes me think maybe she wanted a diamond but got that instead so she feels the need to blatantly say that! Either that or she’s just a tactless, grumpy lady!

I find that literally amusing. Why ARE people so petty? I don’t get it.
If it were me, I would have again complimented her ring, told her that it’s so pretty as I do really love sapphires, and that the future Queen of England also sports a lovely sapphire engagement ring. And then ask her if she thought it was beautiful/get her to agree that Kate M’s ring is gorgeous .
Then I would have smiled at her and said “and it’s so great how WE just love how the beautiful DIAMONDS set off the blue in the sapphire.”

Everyone thinks their ring is better for various reasons… whether it’s a big diamond, small diamond, band, sapphire, etc etc… it seems like many brides are very vocal about their ring! It’s ok to love your ring, but you don’t have to dog other people’s rings. Boo!

I agree that she just might be defensive on any comment she gets on her ring-perhaps others have not been as supportive. I wear a peridot, as personally it means a great deal to me. I love it…but admittedly some people have been like “You didn’t get a Diamond?!” Still, agreed, given you were wearing a diamond she was WAY out of line.

Ew, whats wrong with people?

That’s when you show her your ring and ask her if she thinks it’s tacky!!!

All a diamond or any precious gem is,
is a chunk of rock that did really great under pressure!
Sorry you went thru that.
