Long story short, after stopping my dreaming and seriously thinking about budget I asked my mom to make my wedding dress. We don’t have an exact budget at the moment, but I know it’s going to be very small and I just can’t justify $1-2 thousand on a dress I will be wearing for one day.
My mom is a professional seamstress and frequent makes prom dresses, wedding dresses, does alterations, etc. so it seemed logical to ask her to make my dress. I have complete faith in her dressmaking ability as long as we buy top quality fabrics.
My real question is this: If you went this route, how did you decide on a dress style? Did you go shopping at boutiques even though you knew you weren’t going to buy there? Go by body type suggestions?
I have ideas about what I want, but am not exactly sure how it will look on my body vs. taller women that sites usually use as models (I’m 5’1″).
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I am going semi-custom. Having a local seamstress that does custom bridal gowns redo the entire skirt. I would definitely go and try on as many dresses as you can. Don’t feel bad that you are going into stores with no intention to buy (and don’t mention that to them either =P). There is such a crazy markup on those gowns, how do you think they sell them for so little once they are out of season? You will never know what shape you like until you try them on. Look online first, get a few ideas of the shapes and details you are interested in. Then find those, or similar ones, in your stores. Once you find one you really like, base your custom gown off of that one. You are going to get an amazing gown, perfectly fit for you, at a fraction of the price. I only wish I had a family member that was a seamstress! You lucky lady!

I agree with the pp, dont feel bad trying on dresses so you can figure out what you need. Im getting my dress custom done, since alterations would have been ridiclous because of my body type. I am just under 6 feet and my waist is 11-12 inches smaller than the rest of me.
