I never had kids with my ex but my in-laws contributed to a lot of the issues in our marriage.  Mostly his sister (only sibling.)  Here were some of the issues:

1) They forced me to have her as a bridesmaid even though I didn’t want to…she could have cared less about my wedding.  Wanted to carry her 6mo down the aisle. Laughed hysterically on our video while I had my father/daughter dance.

2) Named her son after my ex and his dad (they share the same name) and then she proceeded to tell me she took it so I couldn’t use it for my future son.

3) Expected my ex to be the “father” in her kid’s life.  Guilted him into spending time with him.  Had her son call every one of her female friends “Aunt” even though he only had one..me.

4) His family consistantly told me that him and I weren’t a “family” b/c we didn’t have kids (infertility issues) but his nephew was his family.

5) Blamed me for him getting deployed b/c I convinced him to re-enlist.

6) Purposely forgetting my B-day every year…even though it is 3 days after his father’s.

There were so many other issues but they never accepted me….and my ex NEVER stood up for me.  He let them treat me that way.  It wasn’t until after I filed for divorce that he told me he chewed his sister out for her actions over our entire 14 year relationship.  His mom apologized to me but I never heard from his sister.

Looking back, I cannot believe I put up with for as long as I did.  And I am thankful to be out of that relationship.

Did any of you get divorced because of your in-laws?

– Not really- though when the marriage went south, one sister in particular was quick to say terrible things about me.

What were the issues and do you wish you had ended it sooner (before kids)?

– No, I love my kids and I am glad they were born.
