We’re not even TTC yet, but we’ve agreed to only share the first initial of the (future) baby name(s). Then we don’t have to hear anyones opinions, and in the case of a couple ideas we have, we won’t have to worry about someone else using it. 🙂

I seen it both ways. I thinking the Baby name to yourself is a good idea if you don’t want unsolicted opinons. I think most people won’t say anything to your face after you named the baby.

We don’t plan on telling anyone. I don’t want anyone’s input but my husband’s and if we decide to change our minds at the last minute, that’s no one else’s business either.

If we settle on a name before baby is born, I plan to share it.  I like the idea of calling the baby by his/her name while I’m still pregnant.

I like classic names, so if somebody makes negative comments about, say, Eleanor or James or some other traditional name that has stood the test of time, it really won’t bother me.  If my tastes were more out-there I might be more insecure about what other people think… but it’s not like I’m naming my kid McKynzee.

We’re not TTC, but I don’t care what my Fiance says, we’re keeping it a secret. We’re not refering to our baby by their name before they are outside of me! I think that’s creepy. Also my sister is a bitch and will probably make fun of it.

I think we’re gonna tell people the gender (if we find out), but I’m not sure. It will all depend on when we get to that bridge!

Not terribly sure yet, as Fiance and I have very different taste in names, but I will definitely be talking things over with my sisters make certain there aren’t any names they want dibs on. Fiance doesn’t have siblings, so no real concern there.

If it comes down to ONE name that we LOVE, if we decide to tell everyone the sex, we’ll definitely tell them the name as well to make clear in no uncertain terms this IS the name we’re using.

I like the idea of keeping it a secret just because of the negative comments people will make. Yet then again, when I was born my mom called her aunt to tell her about me and she reacted negatively even then. I don’t even have a weird or uncommon name. So if someone is going to put your name down, I think it will happen regardless of when you reveal it to them.

I actually brought this up with Fiance the other night after seeing the post about baby-name thieves. We have some fairly unique names in the running that mean something special to both of us, and we don’t want to hear any opinions or have any family members stealing them.

We told everyone the sex, but wanted some element of surprise, so we kept the names secret. For that reason, and because I really didn’t want anyone’s negative opinions!

I didn’t keep it a secret, but if I have another child in the future I might!

@Torrid:  This happened in the opposite to my friend!  They thought they were having a girl, had the name Addison picked out, everything was Addison-this and Addison-that, it was everywhere!  So when the baby was born and turned out to be a boy…  I think they did some scrambling!  (I like to think they are glad they weren’t able to use the name Addison, since it’s crazy popular now)

My former boss and his wife were keeping it a secret, but he was so excited we talked about it and gave him suggestions all the time.  They weren’t finding out the sex, but decided that they would together pick out 3 names for either sex, and then if it was a boy, Mama would pick from those three, and if it was a girl, Dad would pick.  It basically was like a surprise for everyone, even one parent!

I think it is so smart to keep it a secret!

Yup, we’re keeping it a secret.  Though I did tell my nagging sister that we are not naming him after my father, so she can start getting over it…

My coworker did, and the genders. She had twins and told us that though. I thought it was weird… Especially because there were like 2 of our friends that knew and they would like brag that they knew. It made certain people feel less important. But to each their own I suppose! =)

We’re in the secret name club! We had a boy name picked out before we even started TTC, and we’re having a boy in 6 short weeks, so that made the process easy for us, no “short list” to work from…though we still have to decide between two middle names. I just saw too many friends who shared names or lists ahead go through the “Oh, I have a dog named such-and-such” or “Really? That name is so [old fashioned/weird/boring/unusual/etc.]” or the mom had a name on the list that was her fave but her friends/relatives all hated it and she agonized in the hospital for days before finaly putting a name on the birth certificate. So, I have always known I would insist on keeping it a secret from everybody.

We did pick a “code name” for the baby, we call him Thor since we went on a trip to Iceland when I was 5 weeks pregnant. We refer to his real name as his “secret identity, because superheroes have to protect the people close to them” and it gets a chuckle.
