We’re only having 4 hours for event time and probably about 20 minutes of that will be for the ceremony. We’re also not planning on having a cocktail hour. Did anyone else not have one? How did you do it? Just go from ceremony right into the first dance or meal?
We have two hours before the event to take pictures, by the way.

@honeypatch: We didn’t have a cocktail hour due to our day of schedule. The ceremony started at 6:30pm, after which we made our rounds while the bar opened. About 20 minutes later the DJ called for everyone to be seated for dinner. Then cake cutting, dances, etc.

We planned our wedding so that we wouldn’t need to have the extra expense of a cocktail hour. We did a first look photoshoot so that all pictures were taken prior to the ceremony – immediately after the ceremony everyone went to the reception and dinner was served within half an hour.
I also don’t think they are common around here anyway – I didn’t know about them until I started planning my wedding.

We didn’t really – we did photos beforehand with wedding party and immediate family. Ceremony and reception were in the same space, so ceremony was at 5:30, over by 5:50, guests left the ceremony and went to the reception for about 20 – 25 minutes while we did QUICK extended family portraits in the ceremony area. We did our introductions about 6:20, so there wasn’t a full cocktail hour, but the bar was open. We had apps on the tables.
It worked really well and kept the evening moving.

I personally am having a cocktail hour, but that’s only bc it’s included with our venue space. I’ve been to many weddings without cocktail hours though. They were fine. One wedding there was a long distance between the ceremony and reception space so by the time we got there we were ready to eat something. They did have the bar open though right when we got there. Another wedding they had about 1.5hrs. in between ceremony and reception. Again they were in separate locations, but right down the road from one another. The was a bar across the street, we had our own cocktail hour! As a guest by the time you get to go to the reception I know I like to eat. So I’m sure if you go right into the meal it will be fine!
