I started this thread about not being able to decide on a first dance song. We’ve been searching for years and have yet to really agree on anything. There is one song that we both like but we’ve never really considered it since one of my best friends/bridesmaids used it as her first dance song a few years ago (Better Together – Jack Johnson). I don’t know why but I always kind of felt like that was their song and no-one else should use it but now that I think about it, that seems kinda silly. It’s a song, they don’t own it and I’m sure she would be more than fine with us using it (I would definitely ask her first just out of respect). The only overlapping guests that we have are my other 2 bridesmaids and their SO’s so it’s not like all of our guests will know that it was their song first.
Has anyone used the same song as a close friend/family member? Did they have an issue with you using it?

I remember what my brother’s first dance song was because it was very apropos, but I have NO clue what any other person whose wedding i’ve been used for their first dance song 🙂 I feel like this is something you’re not really expected to keep track of/care about.

No, but I went to about a zillion different weddings where the first dance song was Brad Paisley’s, “She’s Everything”. Like you said, it’s a song. They don’t own it, and they’re certainly not the only ones to have used it. As long as you make sure your friend is okay with it first, I think it would be fine.

I think we are going to use the song that was the first dance song for my FI’s friends wedding about 3 years ago. “When You Come Back Down” by Nickel Creek. Nickel Creek is one of the first things that my Fiance and I bonded over, just a month into dating. They don’t have a lot of “first dance” worthy songs though, so it’s pretty limited what we would choose. I’m still listening to various songs from them, maybe finding something else. But if I don’t, I’ll probably go with that. Any other song would just feel really forced, like we just had to “pick” something. I think it’s better to go with something that has meaning for you, than something “popular” that is just a song.
